Description: Charles Christopher Bowen was born Milford, Co Mayo, Ireland, educated for some years in France, and England (Rugby & Cambridge). He came to New Zealand in the Charlotte Jane, arriving Lyttelton Dec 1850. In 1852 he was appointed inspector of police. In 1860 he crossed the Andes with Clements Markham. On returning to Canterbury, was appointed resident magistrate at Christchruch. Was appointed to the Legislative Council and later became Member of Parliament for Kaiapoi (1875) and was Minister of Justice and Commissioner of Stamps.
