Herries made almost daily entries and during his working week he noted when he was in chambers, who he dealt with, and especially recorded social occasions He left for NZ on 20 July 1893, reaching Hobart 1 Sep and NZ 6 Sep, and returned to England on 20 Jan 1894 on the `Mararoa' to Sydney and the `Ville de la Ciotat' to Marseilles, arriving there 2 Mar and returning overland to England. Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Source of title - Supplied by diarist Accompanying material - As well as the letter from Valentine to his brother (1859) there are items (photocopied) regarding the voyage of the `Annie Wilson' (1854) which appear to have been kept with the journal; accompanying the journal is a letter from the donor giving additional information about the Corliss family and himself, a direct descendant of Amos Burr of the `Tory'. Description: New Zealand colonial treasurer Joe Ward is seen returning from the United Kingdom with a large suitcase containing the loan, while the Opposition members of parliament look on in consternation. Extended Title - The mission to England has been productive of wonderful results, notwithstanding the shadowing of the Opposition detective, and the persistent efforts of the Opposition leaders to damage the credit of the colony in London, and there is grief in the Tory camp. The Million and a Half Loan has been subscribed four-fold, and New Zealand securities were never so high in London. 'Don't you think, Mr Evening Roast', suggests the little doctor, 'that you have overdone those articles of yours. Have they not been too malignant - too vindictive?
