Description: The papers largely consist of correspondence spanning four decades between Jane Oates and her sister, Margaret Morten, who lived in Derbyshire, England, but include letters written by Samuel, John Morten (husband of Margaret), various children of the Oates and Morten families, and by various other family friends and relatives. Letters give details about family matters, the concerns of stock and crop farming, adverse weather conditions, etc both in New Zealand and rural England. The collection includes photocopy of passenger contract ticket for and photograph of Jane Oates and children on their departure for New Zealand, as well as genealogical material, and a letter written by Watters to her family in New Zealand when she was visiting the family home and relatives at Monyash, England in 1955 Source of title - Supplied by Library Other - See MS-Papers-8236 for further letters from the Oates family in New Zealand to their family in England Accompanying material - Accompanied by copies of photographs (originals in Photographic Archive) and material relating to the Rev. Also, letters from William Webb's nephew, Arthur Foote, to his family from France and Sling Camp during World War I, together with greeting and christmas cards of that era. Source of title - Supplied William and Ellen Webb, son of William Webb and Frances Harris, who were originally from Truro, Cornwall, were born in Hokitika. Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Source of title - Supplied by diarist Accompanying material - As well as the letter from Valentine to his brother (1859) there are items (photocopied) regarding the voyage of the `Annie Wilson' (1854) which appear to have been kept with the journal; accompanying the journal is a letter from the donor giving additional information about the Corliss family and himself, a direct descendant of Amos Burr of the `Tory'. Description: Forthright and articulate letters of a family prominent in Anglican affairs in England and New Zealand. Topics include the 1848 revolutions, an indignant account of the Second Spring of the Catholic hierarchy, the Crimean War, the European War 1914-1918; strikes and most social or religious movements of the time. Also typescript of Catherine Orbell's voyage to New Zealand in the ship "Mariner". Charles's correspondence include his mother Ann, sisters Eliza, Della and Mary, which continue after Charles emigration to New Zealand in 1849, up to June 1855 when Mary wrote to report Dell's death. Ellinor's correspondence deals chiefly with family and religious matters, including letters from her mother Caroline, 1871-1872; sister Annie, 1872-1874, and Mary, 1868-1872; cousin Caroline Abraham, 1868-1872; Alice Lloyd, 1875; Mary Ann Martin, 1872; A M Nihill, en route to England on the Chatham, 1856; Sarah Sewyn, 1867-1868; and Elizabeth Sewell, 1865. Source of title - Supplied title Ellinor met Charles Hunter Brown in Auckland during 1860, where she was staying with relatives Caroline and Archdeacon Charles Abraham.
