Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1839 to 1914 and most are based on Taine's own experience although they contain also an outline of the early history of the colony from other sources. He came to New Zealand aged 22 on the `Adelaide' and lived in Wellington till 1862 when he moved to Dunedin. After 1879 Taine lived in Auckland. At the end of volume 3 there is a section on early Wellington street names. Also (volume 3 p 515) there is a note on the history of Waiwera which Taine frequently visited. Description: Simpson's diary describes the voyage and gives brief descriptions of Wellington, Wanganui and Bulls Simpson, a cabinet maker from Birmingham, came to New Zealand with his wife and children on the `Dallam tower' in 1875, travelling as steerage passengers. Their infant son Harry died during the voyage. After brief stay in Wellington the family moved to Wanganui and then on to Bulls where Simpson obtained work as a carpenter. Description: Collection comprises extracts taken from Krull's letters to his mother covering the period 15 January (just prior to arrival at Wellington on the `Equator') to 25 May 1859. They describe life in early Wellington, trips taken to the Wairarapa through the Hutt Valley and to Otaki, and Krull's impressions of the natives. Includes preface page written by Boll. Accompanying material - Accompanied by copy of article on Krull from Wanganui Historical Record, (November 1980), and copy of letter from donor re provenance of letters. Frederick Krull arrived in New Zealand in January 1859 on board the Swedish ship `Equator'. He established himself as a well-known merchant in Wellington, and was a member of the City Council and Harbour Board.
