Artist unknown :[Early mission station in Northland, probably James Shepherd's station ...

Date: 1837 - 1842

By: Methodist Missionary Society

Reference: B-121-024

Description: Extensive view by Whangaroa harbour above Touwai Bay with bush-clad hills. In the left foreground is a meandering river with mangrove swamps, and the stumps of several large trees. In the centre and right foreground are several fenced and cleared areas. A style leads over the fence to the right and three men and a dog are following a pathway towards a group of buildings, including a house and several sheds in the middle distance. A woman and child are on another section of the path closer to the buildings. The buildings look down over the harbour. On the water are several canoes, including a long war canoe in the distance. Identified as Whangaroa Harbour from a photograph in Barry Mitcalf's book "Northland, New Zealand" (1984), p. 32. top of page, showing a view looking down into Whangaroa Harbour from the peak of St Paul's. The right foreground topography appears to match that shown in this drawing. A researcher familiar with Whangaroa (visited 20 August 2008) confirmed the topography as Whangaroa and suggested the likely identity of the mission station. James Shepherd had close links with the Methodist mission station at nearby Kaeo. Compare another view of Shepherd's mission station taken from the opposite side ' N W View of Mr Shephears House in Wangaroa, Nov 13 1841' by Richard Taylor E-296-q-031-3. Dating: date of 1838 suggested by paper watermarked 1837, in England, before the artist visited New Zealand. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on wove paper 206 x 404 mm Provenance: From the Methodist Missionary Society, London.

A W [artist's initials] :Picton N Z [1870s or 1880s]

Date: 1860 - 1890

By: A W (Artist), active 1870s?; Hogg, Neville William (Dr), 1927-2007

Reference: B-121-021

Description: Shows wooden three-storied house (if an attic window is included), painted yellow, with a fenced-in garden and a flagpole on the left, two women with long dark dresses and headscarves chatting on the road outside the fence, by the flagpole with the Union Jack flying. On the right is a rough fence with deciduous trees and there are further houses on the slope leading down to the harbour in the background. The scene is in the flatter part of the town that is some distance back from the waterfront. Picton had buildings of this size as early as the later 1860s, although the number of houses shown and the style of the womens' clothes suggest a later date of the 1880s or 1890s. Photographs in Pictorial Reference Service checked, along with the images reproduced in Henry D. Kelly's book 'As high as the hills ; the centennial history of Picton' (Whatamongo Bay, 1976), but no clue to the identity of the house has been found. Identity of the artist not known. The Library has a black and white photograph of a watercolour of "Wainui House, Nile Street, Nelson" (neg 47028 1/2) signed AW and dated 1893, location of original unknown, which could possibly be the work of the same artist, although the form of the monogram is different. The artist's style is competent and suggests some training. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Picton. N.Z.; Recto - bottom right - AW Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Pencil, watercolour and gum arabic 227 x 336 mm
