Description: Maori group beside European military tents at river mouth, with samll bridge and trees, with ships in harbour in background. Two rowboats moored at rivermouth Attributed by the previous owner to Charles Heaphy, showing early site of Auckland and painted about the time of the Northland wars. However, the style of the work is not like Heaphy's, and Heaphy was not in Auckland in 1844. The background harbour does appear to be Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, and the work with a Heaphy-related provenance may be by a member of the Churton family. It may date from the 1860s, rather then the 1840s Inscriptions: Verso - label and other inscriptions written by seller of this work, describing it as by Charles Heaphy, showing the early site of Auckland and painted about 1844. Description: View from where Moreing's Creek enters the Hutt River, looking south towards Petone, with the Western Hills to the right. H. W. Petre's house is the furthest house to the far right and the other houses are spread along Petone foreshore. Two horsemen about to cross the bridge over the creek, a Maori man on the far side of the creek and flax lining both river and creek. The central large house may be the Queen's Head Inn Original of no 41 in Brees' "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" Petre's house on the right is likely to be his first home at Petone, rather than his second built at Woburn, which was further into the valley and on the other side of the Hutt River. Description: Shows Fort Richmond, a group of voluntary militia on a road, and the Hutt River with a canoe As the fort was not constructed (under the direction of Captain Compton of Lower Hutt) until 1845 and Brees left Wellington in 1845, this work must have been painted in that year. The 58th Regiment occupied the fort immediately after it had been completed in April 1845. The soldiers shown are militia, civilian volunteers, identifiable from their mixture of red and blue uniforms. Not reproduced as engraving in Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847), although another view of the fort is shown as Plate 10, no.33. Brees' text on page 22 of Pictorial Illustrations gives considerable details about the plan and cost of the fort. Inscriptions: Backing board recto - Opened 1844. The view is taken looking down the stream & shows Fort Richmond, it was constructed under the direction of [blank]. Johnston, 33 Central Tce. [20th century inscriptions in pencil. Description: Shows a coach and four about to cross a bridge over Ngauranga stream in the foreground. The Hutt Road is visible to the right. Three buildings, including Futter's Tavern in the background. There is a half-canoe monument to Te Wharepouri, upright in the ground beyond the buildings and below the hills Quite possibly a copy of an earlier work by another artist. Other known historical paintings by Rollason appear to be copied. He was known to be painting around 1900. See 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' negative 19460 1/2 for a possible original for Rollason's painting. The artist for 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is unknown and the photographic print was among collection items held by Anthony Murray-Oliver, with no accompanying documentation. It seems likely that the painting was lent for copying in the 1960s. One extra detail in 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is a cross on top of the hill closest to the sea; however, it lacks the additional cart and horse on the far side of the stream. The painting includes a view of Futter's Tavern. See also Brees, S.C. The view is taken looking down the stream, and shows Fort Richmond, which was constructed under the direction of captain Compton, an enterprising settler of the Hutt ...[here follows considerable detail about the construction, dimensions and price of the fort] ... The excitement which was felt at the Hutt when a party of the 58th regiment took up their quarters in the fortress on the morning of 24 April 1845, will not soon be forgotten ... the settlers had just completed it on the evening of the previous day when an attack was expected from the natives... As Brees left New Zealand in 1845, his drawings for this engraving must have been completed in 1845 A related, but not identical watercolour is held by the Library (IRN 82218), showing the fort and bridge from a different angle, with a party of military.
