Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Six-panelled account of the 1957 discovery by divers of the possible remains of the Pink and White Terraces under the waters of Lake Rotomahana and of exploration (sponsored by Sir Henry Brett) in July 1886, just after the eruption of Mount Tarawera, by Alfred Warbrick and J. A. Philip, with Hau-te-Horo and Toko. Warbrick insisted on abseiling into the still active crater, and was forced to climb up again when it began to erupt. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Provenance: Dr P M Barclay of Middlesborough England donated this and two other works to Tauranga District Libraries in 1989; he had inherited the work from his grandfather who was surgeon to the 43rd Monmouth Light Infantry Regiment, although the surgeon himself did not serve in New Zealand.
