Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: A panoramic view from the sea, looking towards the site of New Plymouth just prior to settlement. There are Maori canoes in the foreground and in the distance on shore a Maori pa and Richard Barrett's accommodation barracks and hotel. The Sugar Loaves are to the right Islands off shore are named. In 'Information relating to the settlement of New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841), p. 9-10, under Climate and soil 'Mr G. Description: A small mortar or cannon on a wheeled carriage, standing on a wooden platform, possibly seen by the artist on a visit to New Plymouth in 1879. There is a rough indication of trees beyond the cannon The text may be a transcription of text in Maori and English below the cannon depicted. There appear to be words written on a plaque beneath the mouth of the cannon. The cannon, known as Dicky Barrett, was first located in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, from 1875. Description: The early section of the diary recounts Heberley's experiences as a captain's apprentice and cabin boy on vessels sailing out of London to many destinations including Hamburg, Sydney and the West Indies. Much of the later narrative describes whaling and the life of a whaler in Cook Strait and the Marlborough Sounds. Also describes life with local Maori which includes comments on Maori tribal wars, his experiences with Te Rauparaha, the taking of slaves and conflict with Europeans. In 1831 Heberley took as his wife a Maori woman at Port Underwood (later married by Samuel Ironside in 1840). Heberley purchased land in Port Nicholson before the arrival of the New Zealand Company. He piloted the Tory into Port Nicholson, and round the coast to Wanganui and Taranaki. While she was at Kaipara he climbed Mount Egmont with Dieffenbach (Dec 1839). Diary ends in June 1843 as Heberley gives up his role as a pilot operating in Worser Bay and moves into Port Nicholson to start fishing and returns to whaling. Diary probably transcribed by an unknown hand, with further annotations added, giving proper Māori spellings for words used in the original manuscript. Heberley was a whaler who became a pilot in Wellington. He was also known as `Worser' and Worser Bay is named after him. His brother's name, 'John Hebley', appears at the top of the first page. On the left is a band rotunda. Date ascribed based that information that the Band Rotunda was built in 1891. The small extension at the left edge of the lake was filled in, in 1892.
