Description: The author, an unnamed corporal in the 40th Regiment, reports both naval and military action in South Auckland during the Waikato war. The diary ends in November 1864 and is followed by accounts of the author's voyage back to England and his later life in the United States, where he is traced to Arizona in the year 1869. Oldham, Alfred, 1831-1919 : Recollections

Description: The recollections contain an account of Oldham's experiences as a farmer, flax manufacturer and lay preacher. Includes an editorial note by the donor who retyped the recollections from an earlier typescript. Oldham was born and grew up in Nottingham. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859 and initially farmed at Mangawai, Maungatroto and Paparoa in Northland. A Methodist lay preacher, he conducted services in this district before an official Methodist circuit was established. He became involved in the manufacture of flax matting and in ca 1880 moved to Tuakau in Waikato where he ran a flax factory for about 18 years before retiring to Auckland. He also served as a lay preacher on the Pukekohe and Auckland Methodist circuits. Quantity: 1 folder(s). 0.01 Linear Metres.
