Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Album of photographs relating to mountains and mountaineering in the Southern Alps. A photograph of George John Roberts, Charles Edward Douglas, and Leonard Cockayne (p 1), was probably taken by George Roberts' wife, who took one of the group at the same time but in different positions (See image at PAColl-5926-13) C H Stonor is seen with "Dr Teichmann" [i.e. Ebenezer Teichelmann] (p 40). Two photographs at the end of the album are of Tasmania, one showing a bush scene with a small waterfall; and one taken by John Watt Beattie of Hobart from the bay. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Southern Alps towards the West Coast, chiefly taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, with the last two images probably taken by Marcel Kurz. The box is entitled "W.A. Kennedy. Dr. T. 4 (Box 22). The images are separated into nine sequences filed in paper folders, with two loose images at the end. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod. The first page shows 9 ink drawings showing the ascent of the Hochstetter Dome in March 1883, surrounding a photograph of Anna and Robert von Lendenfeld. The ascent was made by Robert Lendenfeld, his wife Anna, and New Zealander Harry Dew. Page 15 is a water colour painting entitled "Die Haast-Spitze 3017 m. vom Theodolithenstandpunkte am Lindagrat", signed R v L. Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: A six-panelled account of the deaths of 7 surveyors in Canterbury in the 1860s and 1885. They were Henry Whitcombe (mistakenly called George by the artist) who drowned while crossing the Teremakau River with Jacob Louper (correctly Lauper) in 1863; Carleton (correctly Charlton) Howitt and two others (Robert Little and Henry Miller) drowned in Lake Brunner in 1863, their packs found by the sole survivor, James Belgrave Hammett; Charles Townshend (correctly Townsend), drowned while crossing the Grey River in 1863; George Dobson, shot by the Maungatapu murderers in 1866; and Edward Lake Paske, who died in a snowstorm in the Clarence Valley in 1885 (correctly 1886), followed by another member of his party, Hugh Thompson who died in similar circumstances on the same trip. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News.
