Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: The journal covers the period Sept 1869 to March 1872. It describes the breaking in and development of the Gubbins brothers' farm and comments on pioneering life in the Waikato. Part 2, p 17, 18 and part of p 28 are missing. It appears to have been transcribed in 1974 by E McDonald who also provides an introduction to the journal entitled `Mr Gubbins comes to Auckland in 1869 and buys a farm in the Waikato',which gives biographical details about Arthur Gubbins. Publication - Published in Auckland-Waikato Historical journal, nos 24, 25, 27 (Apr, Oct 1974, Oct 1975) Source of title - supplied title Gubbins and his brother Evans emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand and took up land at Ohaupo, south of Hamilton, in 1869. Description: An account of a trip around New Zealand during September 1873. It begins in Auckland, takes in Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and Lake Tarawera where Bishop spent much of his time. He also visited Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin very briefly. Many of his observations are about local Maori. The account is, at times, written in a diary format.
