Description: Cadastral map of the entrance of Kaipara Harbour, from the Waionui Inlet, Papakanui Spit, South Head down to Mairetahi. Several placenames are given along the eastern coastline, Kawau, Pararaha, Waipiro, Haratai, Te Pua, Waioneke, Onumotu, Taumata, Karukanihui. Four areas are highlighted and their acreage given: Okaka (1851), Whiritoa (1558), Waioneke (5500), and Mairetahi (6300). Both the Okara block and the Whiritoa block have small designated Native reserves, marked 'N.R.' Pencil note at bottom of map 'By Chas Heaphy?' Description: News item from Napier announcing an incident in Poverty Bay, four miles from Napier, involving Te Kooti and his men, and Captain Reginald Biggs who had been pursuing him for some time. Description: Sketchmaps of land near Ormondville, southern Hawkes Bay, depicting part of the boundary of the Eparaima Maori Reserve, the Tauraekaetai, the Hua Tukituki and the Ohinehua Streams, a road, bush, and fern hills. The first is a sketch of 'Paul's Native (Maori) reserve', which runs from Ormondville, over grass flats, between the Tauraekaetai and Ohinehua Streams, and includes bush on both sides of the Hua Tukituki stream, to a vertical boundary point. Across the boundary is bush designated for 'white people'. On the second map of the same area, entitled 'Reserve as it w[oul]d be available for white people', the boundary is horizontal and located two-thirds along the Tauraekaetai Stream. The area above the boundary is marked 'all good bush'; the area below is marked 'good bush available for white people'. Both maps indiciate the Eparaima Maori Reserve, beside the Tauraekaetai Stream and the road. Traced by GDH Buchanan. Quantity: 2 manuscript map(s) on single sheet. Description: Cadastral map with topographical information of the Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa districts from the eastern coast at Castlepoint westwards to the Tararua and Rimutaka Ranges and southwards to Palliser Bay. Coloured areas of the map refer to the reference key; namely Native reserves, Native lands, land under negotiation and Crown land. Over 50 streams have Maori names. Settlements such as Featherston, Greytown, Carterton are indicated. Several settler names are associated with land ownership, including Riddiford, Baxton's, Cameron's, Moores, Guthries, Telfords, Luxfords, Vallance's, Russell, Donalds, Gillies, Bidwill. The names Manaia and Herangi are also indicated. Most coastal land is Crown land while Maori land is concentrated around the Maungaraki and the Pukehinau Ranges. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: Shows a detailed view of the interior of the house or hotel of an early settler, probably James Wynen, on the Wairau plain, Marlborough. Mr Wynen (or a hotel guest) and a Maori woman sit within the large fireplace enclosure. A kettle and a pot hang above the fire. The man sits on what appears to be a whale vertebra; another can be seen in the room, also obviously for use as a stool. Various tools and instruments can be seen around the room, including a shovel, a rifle, rope, pots and utensils. Kete, or perhaps nets, can be seen through the opening into another room, where an anchor can also be seen. From the thatched roof of the house, a variety of meats can be seen hanging, including ducks and pukeko, and fish. Bunches of ears of corn also hang drying. The wall has been used as a writing surface, probably with chalk; a sailboat and a game of Hangman can be seen, as well as lists of numbers. A dog sits near the couple by the fireside. The room may be part of the Beaver Hotel, Blenheim James Wynen's companion, Kuika Rangiawa, was murdered by Dick Cook in January 1843 in Port Underwood. The dating of this work (April 1851) indicates that the woman in the picture is not Kuika, and that this scene is likely to be an early hotel established by James Wynen. The Beaver Hotel in Beaverton (Blenheim) was not officially set up until 1855, after Wynen had sold his store on the Boulder Bank, Nelson. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Graeme Dawson accompanied by a comprehensive assortment of supporting land documents; printed material relating to the farm and farm ownership; photographs; maps; family tree. The material has been submitted in a binder which has an index at the front. Original owner was James Gibbs (1809-1892) who arrived in Nelson in 1842 and received a Crown Grant of 500 acres at Wakefield in 1852 having settled on the land in 1847. Lone Oak Farm is owned by his great-grandson Colin Franklin Gibbs in 2007.
