Description: Elevated view looking down over the township of Port Chalmers and across the Otago Harbour to Quarantine Island, Goat Island (with single men's quarantine barracks visible) and beyond to the Otago Peninsula (Mt Charles on left and Harbour Cone on right). In the immediate foreground (on left) is the old cemetery. In the foreground there is a railway wagon and large stockpile of rocks waiting to be shifted. In foreground to the right is the cutting for the main Trunk Railway. Retail shops and commercial premises in George Street can be seen, including those of James Menelaus, James Bosworth Taylor (painter & paperhanger) & Simmonds & Sons. On the hill to the left in Grey Street is the Port Chalmers Grammar School and Holy Trinity Church (only partially visible). Photograph was taken by Herbert Deveril and dated ca 1876. The new Port Chalmers Grammar School in the foreground (centre right partially obscured by trees) was built 1874-1875 and occupied from December 1875. The building in George Street on extreme left was not completed until March 1875. Alongside this building is a large excavation for buildings eg Marine Hotel completed in 1881. Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Two sheets of the map of the central route railway, North Island main trunk railway, Turangarere section, each covering up to one mile distance along the Hautapu River. Milage is running from Turangarere towards Taihape. Both sheets show tracks, sheet 2 shows Roapoama's house opposite 70 chains and the track from Moawhango and Marton, while sheet 3 shows a U-turn bend in the track and good sites for platelayer's cottages. The lower diagram in each map is a cross section of the same distance, measuring heights, formation levels, distances and gradients. Maps signed by R W Holmes, 26/11/[18]89. 'Copy of PWD 16466'. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15).
