Description: Album chiefly containing views of the North Island of New Zealand, many taken by professional photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns. Images include one of a cricket match between an English team and the Wellington team, March 23-24 1888, at the Basin Reserve, showing spectators in the foreground, the players on the field, and buildings on the hill behind. There are a number of views of the Whanganui River, including a cave, a canoe with 5 men poling through rapids, a view of the river from Hiruharama, and a waterfall. At the end of the album there are images of Port Said, Malabar, and two newspaper photographs, one of Mrs J Milbourne (nee Maud Beatty, a member of the Pollard Opera Company), and William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, governor of New South Wales 1899-1900. Description: Album of photographs of early Wellington, circa 1880s to 1900s. One view shows the wreck of the "Oliver Lang" at Kaiwharawhara. Other views of the harbour show sailing ships, the SS Doric at Queens Wharf, the arrival of the RMS Aorangi, the small ship Manawatu in port, and the Cobar ferry. Away from the inner city and harbour there are three views of native bush with a stream running through, and one of the house under construction. The album is not full, with photographs only found on pages 8-15, and 19-21. The view of the Union Bank of Australia on the corner of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay shows Johnny Martin's fountain in the foreground. There are several views of inner Wellington, some from Bolton Street, with others showing Government House and Offices. The Chief Post Office is seen behind the wharf where the ship Manawatu is moored (p 14) This is the first of two albums which may have been given to the Misses Yamerton as birthday gifts at the same time, both having the same birthday greeting card, and both having a similar collection of photographs, though not all are the same. Description: 21 cartes-de-visites taken circa 1858 to circa 1860s. Some taken by William Henry Davis and/or his father William Henry Whitmore Davis. Others taken by Batt & Richards. Other photographers are possibly also represented. 19 show scenes in Wellington. The other two are copies, one of a painting, one of an illuminated address (this one by H T Gourlay, Christchurch). Some images have inscriptions in pencil on the reverse. Images include streets, buildings, people, horse and carts, harbour and wharf with ships. An envelope and a letter dated 1958, from the Alexander Turnbull Library to Mr M Davis of Wellington regarding the copying of 21 photographs, are included. Description: Photographs taken by Henry Wright in the Wellington Region between about 1879 and 1899. In the album there is one photograph (p 33), of the Pink Terraces which was possibly taken by the Burton brothers. They include two photographs (on p 1, 36) of his wife (probably his second wife Mary Jane (nee Woolman), as it is likely they were taken between 1886 and 1890, dated from the style of her dress, and he didn't marry his third wife, Elizabeth Hughes Hallett, until 1907) Many were taken around the Wellington coast, including views of the Wellington Heads; two views of Maori whare at Karaka Bay (circa 1879)(p 13) and one with a Maori chief in front of a whare (p 15); and three photographs of a bay near Karaka Bay showing torpedo sheds (p 20), a naval camp (p 30), and the explosion of a torpedo in the sea (p 31).
