Russell, Andrew Hamilton (Lieutenant-Colonel) 1812-1900 : The North road

Description: Copies of two reports written by Russell. The first (5 pages) details the building of the Porirua Military Road (1846-1847) and the Horokiwi Road (1847-1849) by detachments of the 58th and 99th Regiments and mentions the contruction of stockades following the attack on Boulcott's Farm. The second report (12 pages), dated Pauatahanui, 31 Dec 1849, is extracted from Papers relative to New Zealand, volume 5, 1850. This is his official report on the building of the roads, sent to the Lieutenant-Governor. Source of title - Transcribed Russell came to New Zealand as the Captain of a detachment of the 58th Regiment, having seen service in New South Wales and became Superintendent of Roads in 1846. He left the army about 1859 and subsequently farmed at Mangakuri, Hawke's Bay.. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (18 pages). Physical Description: Typescript

Description: Attributed to William Howard Homes on stylistic grounds. Shows Mathieson and Schultze's flourmill to the right with a red-cloaked man leading a horse along Old Porirua Road on the left. Wellington Harbour can be seen in the distance, the building on the near-side of the harbour is possibly the Rainbow Hotel. Matiu / Somes Island and Wellington City are also shown. Description: Shows a Maori man and woman with a child on the woman's back, walking beside their packhorse on a road at the left. The packhorse is laden with red saddlebags. The road continues into the foreground and curves away again to the right, disappearing into a bushcovered hilly area. The couple are passing a central rata tree in flower, and there are bushcovered hills in the distance. In the foreground in front of the rata is a pool or section of a river. Location suggested to be the Hutt Valley, but may be one of the gorges off the western side of the harbour, possibly near the old Porirua Road. Letter of authentication dated 24 August 1983 on backing board. Sometimes known as "Maori travellers ..." Description: Kaiwharawhara stream and bridge in foreground; across the stream is a raupo hut and John Lodge's two-storeyed public house (also known as the Rainbow Hotel or Kaiwharawhara Hotel). The raupo whare is either one built for road-makers, or the immigration barracks built by Te Kaeaea (Taringa Kuri) to house Scottish colonists put ashore at Kaiwharawhara in December 1840. The area is shown before the 1855 earthquake, which raised the flat land in this part, and made the stream more shallow. The road up the hill on the near side of the stream is the Porirua Bridle Path, 6 feet wide. On the far side of the stream is the original Porirua coach road. (Information from Kapi-Mana news, Vol 23 no. 14, 10 March 1981, p. 22, by William Secker). Original deposited by on indefinite loan by Brigadier H N Crawford, August 1968. (See TL 2/56).
