Description: Scene of the battle in progress at Okaihau on the banks of Lake Omapere and near the perimeter of Puketutu Pa, 8 May 1845. Group of Maori are seated in the middle distance on the left. A column of British soldiers is on the left ready to replace those firing on the pa. In the immediate foreground are men preparing to launch a rocket. Instructions are being given by a man in a top hat. Based on a sketch by Lieut-Colonel Cyprian Bridge of 58th Regiment. Extended Title - From Thomson, A S. Description: Shows the battle of Puketutu (or Mawai) at Lake Omapere, near Okaihou, between the Bay of Islands and Hokianga Harbour, with Royal Marines in the right foreground firing a Congreve rocket, ranks of soldiers, Maori in the distance, the pa surrounded by the smoke of gunfire in the background at the foot of wooded hills and the shore of the lake to the right. The man in the top hat standing alongside the rocket is thought to be Lieutenant Edgerton, R. N., with sailors from HMS North Star. The original for a wood engraving 'Attack on Okaihau from a sketch by Col. Bridge, 58th Regt' published in Thompson, A. S. The story of New Zealand (London, 1859) Vol. 2 p.110. Description: View across the flat land alongside Lake Omapere, the site of Puketutu Pa, a battle site in May 1845. Probably drawn a little after the war, since there is no sign of the Pa and cattle are grazing on the site. Lake Omapere is to the right.
