McIntosh album 3

Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: The collection covers mining buildings; interior machinery including the use of scales and smelting; miners both at work and posed for the camera; panning for gold; mine railways and the carts used on them; general views of the area; and other houses and buildings in the area. Also included are the building of the power house for the Talisman Gold Mining Company in Karangahake, a gold mine battery possibly in Karangahake, and a coach pulled by five horses possibly in the Karangahake district. The dating is from the vehicles in some of the images and the geographical area is from information in the negative accession register. Photographer possibly H R Vine. Description: Water race and tram terminus at the Waiorongomai public gold battery. Shows a pipe running up a hillside in the centre, with the tram terminus in the right foreground. Photograph taken by the Burton Brothers studio, some time between 1883 and 1889. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom left - 3215 Waiorongomai Burton Bros Dunedin The goldfields were opened 1881. Tramway was begun in 1882 and officially opened in December 1883.
