Description: Gisborne and Petre went by sea to Coromandel and then by land, first up to Thames and travelling up the river, passing through pa, including Opita, then to Matamata, Tauranga, Rotorua, Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana. They returned to Auckland by way of the Waikato River, passing through Maungatautari and Waipa. The journal includes interesting descriptions of Maori life and Gisborne meet the Revs Brown, Spencer, Chapman and Ashville [sic] and various prominent Maori. Description: Six-panelled account of the 1957 discovery by divers of the possible remains of the Pink and White Terraces under the waters of Lake Rotomahana and of exploration (sponsored by Sir Henry Brett) in July 1886, just after the eruption of Mount Tarawera, by Alfred Warbrick and J. A. Philip, with Hau-te-Horo and Toko. Warbrick insisted on abseiling into the still active crater, and was forced to climb up again when it began to erupt. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Description: A whare and trees in the left foreground, a canoe being rowed by three men on the lake in the centre and the White Terraces in the background, with clouds of steam above them. Probably one of the earliest depictions of the Terraces On the verso is a poem in the artist's hand, to his wife, Rangi Kawau (Rangi Koa), with marginal notes on the Maori words, in the hand of Edward Shortland. Inscriptions: Mount recto - beneath image - Title in ink in the artist's hand Compare two other version of this drawing by Merrett. One dating from 1842 is in the British Library's Grey Albums (Add. Ms 19953 f. 99, pl. 268) an ink and pencil drawing entitled 'Rotomahana, one of the Rotorua Lakes with a view of the hot springs and the ascent to it by natural steps of salyx'; also the Turnbull Library's A-089-008, an ink and wash sketch, almost identical to this one. Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s, chiefly by George Valentine, and Charles Spencer, both of whom visited Mount Tarawera before and after the eruption of June 1886. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the album are images cut from the paper "Newsview", June 1949, showing historic photographs of the eruption, and another double-page from the Weekly News (June 6, 1951) on the "65th Anniversary of the Mount Tarawera catastrophe". The latter article notes that mud, estimated at 75 ft in depth, covered a vast area. The album includes images taken before the eruption, and shows the same areas irreparable damaged. Many show the Pink and White Terraces, the village of Te Wairoa, and the massive rift in the mountain; also a group led by Sir James Hector to study the aftermath and changes wrought by the eruption. Description: Views of Mount Tarawera, Lake Tarawera, the Black Crater in eruption, Echo Lake Crater, and the point where the great Waimangu Geyser burst forth some years later. [The geyser played between 1900 and 1904]. (See Wise's New Zealand guide). Some of the photographs were taken by Charles Spencer, one of the members of Stephenson Percy Smith's party which surveyed the area in 1886 after the Tarawera eruption; and some photographs were taken by Josiah Martin.
