Description: A full-length portrait sketch of a Maori warrior, wrapped in a cloak and holding a taiaha. He stands in front of a whare with decorated gables. Description: Newspaper clippings, correspondence and research papers relating to oil exploration in Taranaki and an article Cowan wrote for Enzed Junior `Told on Waimate Pa: A Taranaki rock of history' published November 26, 1938. Handwritten letter to Cowan from Katherine Mercer dated December 8, 1938 in response to the article `Told on Waimate Pa'. Handwritten notes on `Maori Songs' which is titled `A Lament' and also refers to the song as a waiata aroha composed and sung by Mere Rore of the Ngati Rarua Tribe, of Wairau (Marlborough) for her mother Ramari Harepeka Porea Herewini. Includes lyrics in Maori and translation. Also written in pencil on back of memo paper from the United Service Hotel in Christchurch are notes relating to Maori vocabulary about paddling waka. Also a typewritten waka paddling chant. Copy of article written by Cowan in Brett's Christmas Annual December 1, 1924 `The magic of Te-Tahi-o-te-Rangi' a tohunga who was marooned on White Island. Newspaper clippings relating to Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua and North Cape, Te Reinga. Also includes a black & white silver gelatin print, mounted on cardboard of a Maori man and woman. The man is presumed to be Kipa Hemi Whiro, but the woman is unknown. The man is holding a pounamu mere and is dressed in a European suit with a korowai over the top. The unidentified woman is wearing a pounamu tiki and piupiu worn diagonally over the shoulder, over a black dress of the style in fashion in the 1890s. Was in an envelope labelled `Cook Strait' photos 1. Kipa Hemi Whiro (Pelorus) 2. `Endeavour' at The Brothers. This folder also contains an image of the ship HMS Endeavour. Terraces album 3

Description: Photographs of New Zealand, many taken by Robert Henry Bartlett. Several of these were taken in Nelson, one showing Fairfield House, and one interior view of a room (on page 50) with the pencilled caption "Fell - Nelson". Possibly in what is now named Warwick House which was built by Alfred Fell in 1854. However pages 19 to 31 contain photographs taken by Josiah Martin in the Rotomahana hot springs area including the village of Te Wairoa, and the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 Tarawera eruption. The album contains 53 pages of which 32 to 49 are empty. Pages 51 to 53 show scenes relating to Florence (Italy), one of the city, and two showing art works (one a relief carving in the Campanile di Giotto, "La logica"). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
