Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Several images on one pagle. At the top of the page, two shacks and a cabbage tree, 'Smith's station' at the mouth of the Waianakarua, looking inland, with the river to the right. Left, below that, Taiaroa standing on the beach, staff in hand, appearing to be speaking, observed by several people lying down. The title refers to Rauparaha's conquest of the east coast and to the local paramount chief's defiance while Rauparaha is safely in the North Island on Kapiti. Below on the right, three drawings of the same man's head in a bonnet, and a right-angles, a coastal view looking north along the beach from Onekakara, Moeraki, with several canoes pulled up on shore to the left. At the bottom left of the page, a cryptic drawing possibly of a rocky outcrop, titled Penal Sett. Description: Shows figures on three horses dismounting at hut in centre left background. Hut appears to be of wood, with wooden chimney, and iron roof. A cart approaches in right distance. The title begins with 'and reach the hut' so is presumably a continuation of information in a diary or on another picture. Dated around 1890 as this is assumed to be the exterior of Mrs Birley's establishment shown in A-169-032. She is listed in Wises as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown during the 1880s, and then at Glenorchy in 1890-91. In 1892, J.K. Birley is listed as the hotel-keeper of Mt Earnslaw Hotel, Glenorchy, which may be a grander establishment than this one! Description: The entrance from Evans Bay, Wellington Harbour, to the tunnel built by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water, a lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula. The entrance to the tunnel is cut into a cliff and supporting beams are built around the opening. A small hut stands to the right of the tunnel and a path winds over the hill-top to the right. Rocks, flax bushes and a small cabbage tree are distinguishable in the foreground.
