Description: Photograph album of New Zealand and Pacific Island scenes. Most were taken by George Dobson Valentine, in the North Island of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti; a few were taken by the Burton Brothers in the South Island. Within the New Zealand scenes there are a large number of views inside and out of the Waitomo Caves; and another group show the area around Lake Rotomahana with the Pink and White Terraces before and after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Description: Postcards, chiefly of Australia, including Tasmania, Adelaide, Queensland, New South Wales, with several showing various tin mines in Tasmania. There is a section of New Zealand postcards in the middle of the album, many taken by an Australian photographic company "Charles H Kerry & Co", labelled "Series 53. Hot Lakes District, New Zealand". These images are tinted, and include views of the Huka Falls, the Pink and White Terraces, Waiotapu, Ohinemutu, Whakarewarewa, Lakes Waikaremoana and Taupo, and the Aratiatia Rapids. The NZ images also include views of the Mount Cook region of the South Island, including Franz Josef Glacier, Hooker Glacier, Mounts Darwin, Sefton and Cook, and Lakes Te Anau and Wakatipu. Description: Photographs of: a group of people gathered to watch sports on the Queen's Birthday in Tonga including Seddon; a view of the coast at Cape Foulwind; a letter addressed to "Sire Sedone, Pirima, Neuseland" from Niue; a gathering of Tongans outside a marquee in Nuku'alofa for the Queen's birthday celebrations; Seddon and what are probably other parliamentarians standing on the steps of a building; a large totara; the Seddon family on a visit to the state schoolhouse in Levuka, Fiji; the Seddon family gathered round an ornately framed certificate noting Seddon's achievements; Huka Falls taken by the Burton Brothers; Seddon holding a taiaha seated in a group of seven working men; the recreation ground in New Plymouth looking towards Mount Taranaki; two portraits of Samoan girls; a cart travelling on the Cable Bay Road looking out over the bay taken by Tyree Studio; Lake Taupo from Motutere taken by Burton Brothers; and a group of men, possibly including Seddon, sitting and standing on the steps of a building. There are a number of images of Waiwera, including one of two whaleboats meeting a horse-drawn carriage transporting a group of people from a steamer to land. Photographs relating to Maori include views of Parihaka; Taipari's house at Thames; Ngati Maniapoto chief Wahanui at his house, Alexandra; a large group in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa; and one of Aporo and Ngareta at Wairoa. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Album of photographs relating to a trip taken by a group travelling on the first "Motor Reliability Contest" in 1906; probably created and in part photographed by Robert M McKnight. The contest involved ten cars (4 Daracqs, 2 Cadillacs, and 1 Rover, 1 steam car, 1 Oldsmobile and 1 Leyland) travelling 400 miles from Auckland to Taupo and back. Photographs relating to the contest, including scenes photographed during the trip are on even numbered pages from 2 to 36, possibly taken by R M McKnight in 1906; odd numbered pages from 1 to 63, were taken by unidentified professional photographers, circa the 1880s to 1890s; all relating to the route taken on the 1906 road contest. Most of the earlier photographs are scenes in the thermal area around the Wairakei and Bay of Plenty Regions and include images of the Pink and White Terraces taken before and after the 1886 Tarawera Eruption. One of these earlier images shows "Macandrew and party at Wairakei." Views of the Motor Reliablity Contest show scenes taken on the route; groups of people involved; lineups of all ten cars; and one car fording a river. The "Motor reliability contest" was held under the ausspices of the Auckland Automobile Association (Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12451, 14 March 1906, Page 7, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19060314.2.31). contests of the same name were held in Melbourne, Australia, and other countires. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s (some dated 1868), and about 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from comparison with handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51) Early photographs of Wellington show a view down Boulcott Street, a view probably from Boulcott Street looking down over `Rhodes Bay' (now the reclaimed area beyond Willis Street), and looking towards the city from Thorndon. One view in the North Island shows the Kinross residence in Napier. Most of the photographs are of central North Island, with particular emphasis on the volcanic areas around Lake Taupo, Lake Rotomahana, the Waikato River (including the Huka Falls and Aniwhaniwha Falls), Tokaanu, Ohinemutu and the Pink Terraces. Several scenes show military outposts and redoubts, including two of Captain Gilbert Mair "and his men" (the Arawa Flying Column), at Kaiteriria Pa, Rotokakahi "just arrived after a raid after Te Kooti"; and one of the interior of the pa "with Captain Mair's contingent". In the South Island scenes include Lyttelton, Akaroa Harbour, the Otira River and Gorge, Bealey River, the summit of Arthurs Pass, the Porters Pass Hotel, Taramakau River, Gibson's Quay at Hokitika, one of several small churches at Hokitika, and Hereford Street (Christchurch). Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P.
