Description: View from the hills opposite Wanganui township, looking down on the river and town, with the Gun-boat Stockade (the site of Moutoa Gardens) closest, the Main Stockade (Rutland Stockade) and the middle stockade (York Stockade). Houses and possibly a hospital are also visible as is Christ Church and St John's Wood (to the far right), with the sea horizon on the left. The nature of the terrain is also indicated as sandhills, flax swamp, fern and grass. In the distance to the right "The Taua" (a Maori raiding party) is also shown. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: An arrangement of text with the crest of Queen Victoria at the top. Announces that there will be special church services on Sunday 20 June, and a burning of the old hospital together with a general decoration of the town on Monday 21 June. On Tuesday 22 June, there will be a Royal salute, pipe bands, brass bands, groups of Maori warriors, friendly societies, school children; and an avenue of English oak trees will be planted along the road between the cemetery and the new hospital. Description: Steep partially-cleared hills behind a row of single-storied houses, three larger, three very small. A large fenced vegetable growing area in front, with a path winding through the centre. The scene could be in the Hutt Valley or Wellington, but bears a strong resemblance to Richard Taylor's ink & wash drawing titled 'Wanganui Hospital & Mr Nixon's house, Nov. 27 1857' (E-296-q-146-3) A view of Wellington Harbour is on the verso of this page.
