Description: Hand drawn early map of the North Island, with names predominantly clustered in North Auckland and the East Cape. The map says "No natives along this [the lower East Coast] coast as far as Ahuriri". Text (several handwritten paragraphs) under the map discusses church delineations over the Island congregation numbers in various areas eg "Congregation will be found at every principal point". Also "East Cape is occupied by our Native teachers, and the congregations are upwards of 1200"; "Waikato is diveded between us and the Wesleyans". The notes divide the North Island into 14 districts. Shows "Bay of Taranaki" and "Knowsley Bay", "Ruapaka" (Ruapehu), omits Lake Wairarapa, Napier, Hastings, includes Wairoa. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: The first plan (MapColl-832.45gmbd/1876/Acc.29312) shows a surveyed section of Rimutaka Road at Abbots Creek, from the beginning of the new road (numbered 496), over the Abbots Creek bridge and southwest to the second bridge at the small creek where the road forks. A small section of the old road is shown. The second plan (MapColl-832.45gmbd/1876/Acc.29312) shows a more detailed version of the survey, from the beginning of the new road, past the Abbots Creek and bridge. States that contents of road 1 rood 2.6 perches; includes letters JVTLES. Both maps have note: 'District Engineers Office Masterton 25.8.[18]76'. Acc.29311 has ink annotation '497' next to the path of the old road. Includes two letters, one to the Principal Secretarys Office (MapColl-832.45gmbd/1876/Acc.29314) requesting a conveyance for land and a second (MapColl-832.45bmbd/1876/Acc.29313) from the Engineer to the Wellington Superintendant regarding purchase of land for the new road from Josiah Viles, butcher, Featherston for £60. Description: Photocopy of original map, contained in Centennial Atlas material, on scale of 1:95,040. With ms additions. The base map shows significant English and Maori placenames, eg Wellington, Napier, Woodville, Taumarunui, Opotiki, Wairoa, as at 1818-1825. The annotations show significant pa sites eg Ohinemutu, Rotorua, and iwi/hapu areas eg Ngati Manawa. Shows unsigned annotations including sea journey from Bay of Islands to Tauraunga to Whakatane or the East Cape. Also shows journey of Hongi in 1818 and 1821 down Hauraki Gulf. Intensive annotations in the Taranaki region eg Te Namu, Tataraimaka, Te Pihanga (over 40 annotations of sites between the Mokau River and South Taranaki Bight). The map details were gathered over time as draft maps for the New Zealand Historical Atlas, ca. 1940. Description: Manuscript map, with Maori only text, depicting Lake Rotorua, and lakes Rotoiti, Rotoehu, and Rotoma; several Maori tracks in the region. It specifies land beonging to Ngati Pikiao, Ngati Awa, Ngati Rangiteaorere, Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Rangiwewehi and Nga i Terangi. Other land belongs to Tarawhai, Uenukukopako, Tapuika, Kawerau, Tuwhare and Tarawhai. Maori tracks are named Paritangi, Tikipuna, Tearataukanihi, Tekaharoa, Tetahuna. The map was drawn by a Maori representing the collective knowledge of the Ngati Pikiao hapu. For more detail, see 'Traditional cartography in the Pacific Basin' edited by David Woodward and G.
