Description: Shows a profile portrait of a three-masted sailing ship flying two flags from its mast tops. There is a steamship in the right distance, and Pencarrow Head and lighthouse in the left background. This painting was probably commissioned by the ship's three Wellington owners, or the Master Captain James Lee. The "Poneke" was built in Evans Bay, Wellington, in 1878 by John Rees George. She was 79.98 gross registered tons. Her length was 84.5 feet and beam was 18.9 feet. Initially registered at the port of Wellington on 19 March 1878, with her Master recorded as Stephen Ellis. She was owned by John Rees George, Civil engineer, 1878; Archibald McLeod, timber merchant, 1878-1880, William Waddell, Timber merchant and William Weir, timber merchant. Presumed to have foundered at sea with all hands (6) as she was not seen since being sighted off Greymouth. She had sailed from Onehunga on 11 June 1880. (Information from the seller, John Crowder, 1998) Accompanied by a loose card bearing the title "Poneke". To be mounted on the backing board. Description: Shows a profile of Somes Island seen from the region of Seacliff. Shows a large complex of two-storied buildings (newly-built immigration barracks) on the top centre of island, a surveying trig on highest point, and a few small buildings on shoreline. In the left distance, Pencarrow Head lighthouse is visible. The Immigration Barracks are shown in a photograph of Somes Island ca 1878 in the J. E. Fitzgerald Album in the Photographic Archive. Description: Pencil sketch is a preliminary drawing for "Pencarrow Head, Fitzroy Bay" Plate 4 (no. 11) in "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand", London, Williams, 1847. Shows a view looking west towards Wellington Harbour Heads from Fitzroy Bay, with Pencarrow Head protruding at the right, but not topped by a lighthouse as it is in the published lithgraph. Possibly the preliminary sketch for the watercolour, whose fileprint has the negative number 1/2-024747-F (Privately owned?) Dated from other views of the same area. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil sketch, on one side of sheet, 222 x 324 mm. (watercolour on other side) Provenance: Sold by McArthur & Company, auction, in 1987, to NZ Insurance, for their boardroom. Prior to that, purchased at an English country auction, 1986 or 1987 by dealer John Barkis. (pers. comm., Brian Groshinski of McArthurs' Auction, 14. 8. 98)
