Description: Bevan describes incidents in his life in the Otaki and Manawatu districts from 1840 to the 1860s. He was the son of a rope maker and followed his father's trade and farmed. He refers in particular to relationships between Maori and settlers and includes descriptions of Maori pa, legends, customs and the scenery, and a walk he made as a child in 1845 from Wellington to Waikawa, Otaki. Includes shipboard accounts of the voyage to Port Chalmers on the 'Dominion' in 1851 with the Richardson family, a voyage home to England via Melbourne on the 'Thomas and Henry', and 'Royal Charter' in 1857, and the return voyage to Port Chalmers in 1858 on 'Agra'. He includes some of his wife's diary entries in his reminiscences. His first year in New Zealand was spent at Otepopo on the sheep station owned by Charles Suisted. Description: `Not beyond Redemption' by George Davies is a biography of Captain John Guard describing his early life in London, time in Newgate prison, work as a convict transportee, sealer, sea-captain and whaler based at Kakapo Bay in Port Underwood working between New Zealand and Sydney. John and Betty Guard and their two children were onboard the Harriet when it was wrecked off the Taranaki coast in 1834 and the biography details the subsequent experiences of the Guard family and the role the Alligator played in this incident, finishing with the subsequent farming career of John Guard at Kakapo Bay. Entries 28 May 1844-1 Nov 1847 cover his years in Wellington, pastoral work with Maori and Europeans. Mar 1850 concerns Watkin's work as a Methodist minister in Sydney.
