Description: Views of the Otago Region taken by unidentified photographers, circa 1870s to 1895. Many show buildings in Dunedin, including one house `Lisburn House' built for the Fulton family in 1865; also commercial buildings, church buildings, school buildings (Otago Boys' High School), and Dunedin Gaol. The church buildings include the Chapel in Leith Street, the Chapel in Great King Street, and the Baptist Chapel. Description: His papers reflect his involvement in church, political and social affairs particularly through his pacifism Source of title - Supplied title Relationship complexity - Scrapbooks concerning church affairs in Scotland, Australia and Dunedin compiled by Gibb's wife Jeannie (MS-Papers-2054), given by same donor (Acc 74-071) James Gibb was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and educated at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He married Jeanie Gibb in 1881 and they sailed for Victoria in 1882, finally arriving in Otago in 1886. He was minister to First Church, Dunedin for 17 years and minister to St John's Church, Willis Street, Wellington. In 1901 he became Moderator of the United Church. Description: Album of photographs mostly of towns and buildings in Canterbury and Otago, chiefly taken by the Burton Brothers, circa 1880s. They all show city scenes including street views, and images of important buildings. The buildings include church buildings, bank buildings, insurance company office buildings, and hotels (both exterior and interior views of the Grand Hotel, Dunedin). In the North Island, there is a view of the Auckland Synagogue, and a view of Taratahi Homestead, the home of Lady Tancred and Sir Thomas Tancred, in the Carterton District. Description: Much of the material comprises transcripts from the `Southern cross', `The New Zealander', and Hansard. The later years contain a higher proportion of reminiscences. References throughout to Forsaith's interests in Maori land purchases, journalism, music, politics, business and Presbyterian and Congregational churches. The text begins at volume 13 (p730) and ends with volume 32, the last volume about his time in New Zealand Source of title - Transcribed Relationship complexity - Whereabouts of volumes 1-12 is unknown. National Library of Australia was contacted in Oct 1994 but could provide no information on them. In all, they hold volumes 13-77. The volumes from 33 onwards were written in Australia and contain only an occasional mention of New Zealand Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s) positive (ca 800 pages).

Description: Scenic views, chiefly in new Zealand, with few captions. Some images have been identified, noted in pencil. Of particular interest is a pair forming a panorama of Lyttelton harbour with about 30 vessels (p. 18-19). The first few pages show views of Cape Town, South Africa, and at the end of the album a few of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On page 9 there is a hand-illustrated and lettered programme of a shipboard performance held on the S.S. British King, December 11, 1883. Entitled `Royal Incomar Theatre. Bombastes Furioso'. Description: Exhibition certificate with decorative border using Maori carving and weaving patterns. Inside the border, and surrounded by native flowers, are eight vignettes depicting various scenes of the NZ economy (coal mining, sheep farming, scientific research, wheat harvesting, etc). Additional scenes of trade and industry and the agricultural economy are depicted in a panel forming the top of an archway. On either side are supporting columns topped with the lion and the unicorn. At the bottom is a view of Dunedin city showing First Church and other buildings in Moray Place and the surrounding area with Otago Harbour in the background.
