Image published as a greetings card by the Library in the 1970s The view may be of Mount Albert (Auckland), rather than Mount Eden. The image features in Scott, Dick. The inside of the cover bears his bookplate and the luxurious binding is of the type he arranged.

Description: Looking across a river towards mountains. A small Maori canoe is on the river, with flax, cabbage trees and other bush on both sides Originally catalogued by the Library as being painted by J B Fraser, a possible interpretation of the artist's monogram. The annotations on the back were believed to be signed by surveyor Malcolm Fraser, from a reading of the illegible first name. However the writing, and style of drawing and painting match those of Captain I T B Fraser, artist of a group of sketches of the war in Waikato about 1864, Library reference number E-571-q. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - signed with initials in a monogram and date in red brushpoint, on a rock, lower left. Also verso, in pencil: Title: Between Cashels Station and Shortland, Thames Goldfields, about 23 miles up the Ohinemuri River by water: after you leave the bend by a place called Purri Purri you will see the same on the right. Description: Certificate shows an arrangement of text, with a dove of peace at the top, and two seated angels flanking the Holy Bible at the bottom. At the sides are New Zealand scenes: Maori beside a lake with tree fern at the left, and at right a church and cabbage tree in front of a snowy mountain, possibly Mt Taranaki. Denomination may be Presbyterian or Methodist. Other certificates awarded to Mary McKenzie include some from the New Zealand Methodist Sunday School Union, but there is also published evidence that the Otago Sunday School Union may have been linked to the Presbyterian Church. There are also taiaha and tewhatewha (Maori weapons) used as backgrounds to two of the inserts. Likely to be the eastern side of Miramar Peninsula, or the entrance to Wellington Harbour seen from Houghton or Island Bay. Description: Shows a view of the upper Waimakariri River, with snowy peaks of the Southern Alps in the distance. Two figures are standing on the shingle flats in the left foreground. Physical Description: Watercolour, 203 x 292 mm (sight). Provenance: Originally a gift from the artist to Mr and Mrs Dixon. This is probably Mr & Mrs Marmaduke John Dixon who married Mabel Courage in 1897. The artist may have met the couple through Marmaduke Dixon's sister Rosa (later Rosa Spencer Bower), who studied at the Canterbury School of Art in the 1890s. Description: Shows the front of a small single-storey cottage with thatched roof and a verandah supported by five pillars. The cottage has two or three front windows and a front door, two chimneys and a lean-to, with a picket fence running from the house on both sides. A circular garden bed is in front and a cabbage tree, flax and another plant, possibly a fern, are to the right The Rev. Dr Robert Maunsell lived in this raupo cottage from 1838 to 1843. It was superseded by a 6-room wooden dwelling that burned down after three weeks' occupation. Maunsell and his wife were hosts to Governor Hobson in March 1842, with Chief Justice Martin, Abel Best and Edward Shortland also present. Dr Johnson was away from New Zealand between November 1844 and November 1846. He must have made this drawing from an earlier version or possibly initialled and dated it when he gave it to Mrs Hobson in England Other Titles - Maraetai Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - J.
