Many show buildings in Dunedin, including one house `Lisburn House' built for the Fulton family in 1865; also commercial buildings, church buildings, school buildings (Otago Boys' High School), and Dunedin Gaol. The church buildings include the Chapel in Leith Street, the Chapel in Great King Street, and the Baptist Chapel. Description: Contains pencil sketches of Neils Flat [or Flax?] Mills (by A E B), Wakaperau Camp, Our camp at Hunts Bush May 1870 (by A E B), Mr Hunts residence May 1870 (by J W M), and untitled sketches of church buildings, sailboats, and European scenes of ponds, churchyards (by A I C?) and J W M. Wakaperau may be Whakapirau, or possibly Whakapara; both are farm localities in Northland. Newspaper cutting from "The Dominion" 21 March 1928, page 6, confirms that J W M, is likely to be J W Marcroft. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Sketch drawings with colour notes, showing early Christchurch houses and churches, and the Provincial Council Chambers, St Michael and All Angels Church, a windmill, flax and cabbage trees along the river bank, a bridge, and the Port Hills in the distance. Artist may be Rev James West Stack (see similar style of image at A-210-016; Government Buildings Canterbury. [1860?]) One of the images C-081-007 has the name Thompson on the verso. One drawing shows three shops including Albion House [milliner] and Papp[rill, tailor]. These two are listed in Canterbury almanacs for 1860-early 1870s. Another drawing shows St Michael and All Angels, which was built in 1872. Quantity: 8 drawing(s) on seven sheets. Description: Photographs relating to the Dog Tax Rebellion, also known as the Dog Tax War, taken May 1898 in Rawene by Charles P Dawes. The photographs show troops lined up and posing with rifles, a group of men in uniform in front of tents, and a group of Maori civilians laying down arms. In May 1898 Hokianga was the scene of the 'Dog Tax Rebellion' which arose when the Mahurehure hapu of Ngapuhi tribe refused to pay a dog tax instituted by the local county council. Description: Views of a trip along the Whanganui River with views of Paranui kainga (listed as Parinui in the album), showing groups of whare, groups of Maori, various activities in the kainga, canoes on the river, and many scenes of waterfalls along the river. These include Taraipokiore (or Tarei-po-Kiore), Otuitu Falls, Ohura Falls, Kakahi Falls. The "Ladder scene", copy of Denton photograph, and other views of the Whanganui River and Ohura River. There is a gap in the album, followed by a separate sequence on Napier. These images include panoramic views of Napier from various locations, church buildings (including exterior and interior views of St John's Cathedral), hotel buildings and other public buildings and memorial statues.
