Description: Sketch on the right shows a view across a plain with small round ponds from a camp fire beneath overhanging rocks, 'Commissioner's Cave, Ototara. The sketch on the left shows a man with a broad-brimmed hat, and patched trousers, leaning against the walls of a small wooden shelter, with a table and cooking pots on the ground beside him. It appears to be a copy of F. E. Nairn's 'Rakitawine of Te Hakataramea, Waitaki' (original sketch located at C-103-080-1) The view from the rock shelter identified as 'Commissioner's Cave' Ototara from Alfred Wills' drawing 'View from Commissioner's Cave, Ototara, looking southwest. Three of the curious round ponds on the plain. [Oct/Nov, 1848]. Description: View looking north along the beachline, with two food storage platforms and a low building to the right, a food bundle on a stick supported by a pyramid of logs, tents or raupo whare to the left and a European man standing, holding a flag, while a Maori woman crouches behind him, attending to cooking or holding a kete. The word Tipare is inscribed lower left. Mantell's party was close to Hakatere, at the mouth of the Ashburton River, or a little further south, on 7 October. The same kaik, probably Tarawata's, is also shown at E-334-052 and E-334-053 Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Oct 7. [Written across the top of the page, in ink. Description: Four sketches in the Waitaki area in October 1848. Top left: 'Paretamokai' (an uncertain placename) showing a man sitting at the right in front of a tent above a valley. Top centre right: 'A Korari hoe on a razeed taia' (a Maori hoe). Top right: 'Camp at Otaitai' showing a camp site near the foot of a cliff; Bottom left 'Damn specimens. There's grub. M.Malmanche ascending ye wata & finds three wooden turnips' shows Mr Malmanche gesturing indignantly in favour of cooking turnips, rather than keeping them as specimens. Behind Malmanche is a seated Maori man with Malmanche again at the top of a ladder, raiding a whata, or food storage platform. There is a large whare alongside. Bottom right: Valley of the Waitaki Tuesday Oct 25, an extensive view of a valley and hills with a small fenced enclosure to the left, possibly a grave site. The place name Otaitai appears to be no longer in use. It is likely to be just north of the Waitaki River. Other Titles - A Korari hoe on a razeed taia.
