Description: Half-length portrait of Hongi Hika, shown with full facial moko, in a flax cloak, holding a musket. Behind him is a sailing ship, probably in the Bay of Islands, where Hongi came from. Description: A Maori chief standing in a beached canoe, addressing a crowd of warriors, mostly seated, with a few standing. Two other long canoes are on the beach, one with a sail is in the water, and others are pulled up close to a pa or kainga in the left background. A dog sniffs the ground in the foreground. Most men are armed with guns, although one on the far right holds a taiaha. A gourd and flax kit are centrally placed amongst one group of men. Earle's text reads: "A party of warriors had collected at the Bay of Islands for the purpose of making a hostile visit to a tribe on the banks of the Thames. They were detained by contrary winds; and for several days were constantly engaged in listening to speeches from their chiefs, who addressed them from a canoe hauled on shore ... one [canoe], which I measured, was 70 feet long, and carried one hundred fighting men." Originally from Earle's "Sketches illustrative of the native inhabitants and islands of New Zealand" London, Robert Martin & Co, under the auspices of the New Zealand Association. 1838. Plate 9. Description: Shows a red-cloaked figure with a spear making a speech to a seated circle of armed and cloaked men, before a large-trunked tree in bush. At right a shallow cliff drops to a beach with 6 canoes drawn up, and seven figures standing beside them. In the right distance are three sailboats, and on the horizon, part of an island or headland. Previously attributed at different times to Charles Blomfield (according to Graham Chote of International Art Centre, Parnell), and to Nicholas Chevalier. Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated. Quantity: 1 oil(s) on canvas stretched on board.. Physical Description: Oil on canvas on board, 180 x 305 mm. Provenance: Bought with another small oil by the same hand (G-230-2), by Dr Neville Hogg, Dargaville, at International Art Centre, Auckland, 1976. Description: Shows canoes, storehouse and carved objects. Hongi is seated in a central position, with huia feathers in his hair. Earle, seated on the left, is gesturing and is wearing a green cap. Another European is seated behind Earle, his friend Shand. Hongi's family and supporters surround him and the group is seated at the base of a low cliff. The meeting took place in a bay about 1 mile from Kororareka (Russell). Hongi had fought without his armour, supplied by King George IV, and had been wounded by a ball in the chest. He was to die the following year. Identification: the exact identity of Mr Shand is not known. Earle described him as a Scotsman. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. Exhibited in 'The Dream Collectors' Exhibition at Te Papa / Museum of New Zealand, 14 February 1998 -; then touring to Auckland City Art Gallery and Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Also known by title: The wounded chief, Hongi (or Honghi). Description: Profile portraits at the top of the image of "Native of King George Sound" (an Aboriginal) and of "New Zealander" (A Maori man), and, in the lower section, a seated group portrait after Augustus Earle's portrait of Te Rangituke of the Bay of Islands, with his wife and son. Te Rangituke holds a taiaha, and his son, seated to the right, holds a musket. The main portrait is after an oil painting held by the Library 'Portrait of Arangi Tooker' (G-634). Description: Reconstruction of the death of Marion Du Fresne in the Bay of Islands in 1772. Shows part of a pa, with a store-house (pataka) and fence. A group of implements and European objects is in the foreground, including a three-cornered hat and a sword. A cabbage tree and flax plants can be seen in the foreground. Marion du Fresne is surrounded by a number of Maori, with others looking on from the pataka. He is distracted by one of the Maori men offering him what looks like a bird, while another Maori stands behind him, about to strike him with a club. A Maori woman is walking off to the left with another French sailor, and a Pakeha youth, probably one of the ship's crew, looks on in horror. State: Second state; appears in Aglaus Bouvenne, Notes et souvenirs sur Charles Meryon, son tombeau au cimetiere de Charenton Saint Maurice (Paris: Charavay Freres, 1883), facing p.12. Description: 28 artifacts brought back to France by Duperrey from the Bay of Islands in 1824. They include greenstone, bone and wooden carved weapons, implements and musical instruments. There are two axes, a patu and three mere (clubs), a fork made from a bone of Korokoro, Chief of Kahouwera Pa, a feeding tube, four flutes, a comb, four fish-hooks, an oar, two carved waka huia, a kumete or bowl, a bailer, a tiki, earrings, other small adornments, and a carved stick. Likely to have been drawn by Chazal from specimens brought back to France from Duperrey's visit to the Bay of Islands in 1824. Other Titles - New Zealand. Description: A Maori greenstone axe with carved wooden handle, a greenstone patu, a shark's tooth earring, a carved wooden flute and a large bone and flax-bound fish-hook. The text in French beside the earring continues 'et a laquelle ils attachent les idees les plus superstitieuses, les femmes l'en servent pour se dechirer le visage dans leurs ceremonies de deuil" (Translation: and to which they attach the most superstitious ideas, the women use them to cut their faces in their mourning ceremonies). The text alongside the flute marks "A. Ouverture. B. tres petit trou" (Translation: A. aperture. B. Very small hole [at the end of the flute]). Likely to have been drawn by Chazal from specimens brought back to France from Duperrey's visit to the Bay of Islands in 1824. Other Titles - New Zealand. Toki (axe). Patu patu.
