Description: A collection of postcards and printed views (possibly from a magazine) of New Zealand scenes primarily of towns and cities rather than scenic views. They include one of two Maori women washing clothes at Rotorua, another of the Royal visit in 1927 and a family group of seven men and three women possibly taken in Belfast. A number of the postcards have been used. Also included are five original photographs which have been captioned with the family connections: a soldier in uniform, possibly named Ralph Ferguson; Uncle Henry Babe's wedding photograph; cousin Violet Bradford in America; Albert and Elizabeth (Eliza) Babe (brother and sister) and four others; Thomas and Fanny Babe (grandpa and grandma) with Eliza, Harold, Albert, Olivia, Queenie and Gladys. Description: Birds eye view of central Auckland - "This view is compiled and drawn as from a point one thousand feet above and one hundred feet to the rear of the Hospital during the year 1885 and part of 1886 by George Treacy Stevens, Auckland, N. Z.". All the streets are named and every building is shown, as well as the wharves and part of the harbour. Grafton Road, the hospital and part of Auckland Domain dominate the foreground, and the view extends beyond St Mary's Bay (West Haven boat harbour) in the north-west, a block beyond Union Street in the west, to the beginning of Karangahape Road in the south-west and to Judges Bay and part of Hobson Bay in the east. Description: A view from Grey Street, Auckland across a low bridge past a small house towards a large cruciform building and other houses. The large building (the Primitive Methodist Church) has Gothic lancet windows at one end. Attributed to Eastwood by Anne Kirker; see TL 3/1/1, 19.12.75 The building shown is not the Auckland Town Hall (opened in 1911), despite the artist's title. It is the Primitive Methodist Church, opened 16 March 1851, on the corner of Airedale Street and Queen Street. The view is probably taken from Grey Street and looks towards Queen and Airdale Streets across the site of the future Town Hall. The title may have been added years later, perhaps around the time the Town Hall was being planned for this site. Dating: the work has a suggested date of 1863, conforming with dates inscribed on other examples of this artist's work in the Library's collection. The church building is shown in its earliest form, before later alterations. The name Alexandra Street was also an early one.
