Scenes also taken by them in Tonga and Samoa. A number of images show scenes in England, including a group taken near Egremont in Cumbria, of ice on the Mersey River in 1895. There are a large number of copies of paintings of romantic scenes. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly showing facets of Christchurch and Lyttelton. The first scenes are a group portrait of men and women with the caption `Camera club (flashlight)'; two photographs of a wedding, the first a group portrait, and the second the bride and groom, both scenes taken outside on a lawn outside a conservatory; the altar at St Thomas' (Newtown, Wellington); and an exterior and an interior view of St Barnabas' Church, Norfolk Island. The rest of the album is scenes of the Christchurch and Lyttelton areas, including interior and exterior views of Christ Church Cathedral and of St Michaels' Church, Christchurch; views of Lyttelton and the Lyttelton Wharves; the Canterbury Museum and its gardens; Hagley Park and the Avon River. The wedding groups, a young woman wearing a mortar board and gown on the steps of a church, and a family of four with their dog, are the only portraits, none of whom are identified. Description: Shows Armagh Street bridge over Avon River from Cambridge Terrace, with two cabbage trees in foreground and other exotic trees. Cathedral spire on left, rooftops of central city buildings, including United Service Hotel building and Post Office tower centre right, and Port Hills with Castle Rock beyond. Photographs of Armagh Street Bridge show wrought ironwork rather than solid stone in the top section. United Service Hotel building was under construction in 1885 and was completed about 1886. Description: Looking west along Armagh Street in Christchurch, May 1860. Riccarton bush is in the left background. The long building with three dormers, under the left end of the bush is the Plough Inn. Taken by Alfred Charles Barker. Cranmer Square and Hagly Park are in the background, but not visible. The keeper of the Plough Inn was J Dilloway, who was also a gunsmith. The last house on the right, going towards the river, is near the corner of Armagh Terrace and Park Terrace, and was at some time occupied by Sir Henry Wigram (1857-1934). Note on back of file print reads: "Second house from right in background is Thacker's `Guardian' Printery where the first sessions of the Prov Govt were held - 1853-4." This photograph is published in Johannes C Andersen's book `Old Christchurch in Picture and Story', 1949, page 235. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu.
