Description: View from the south bank of the Whanganui River, showing York Stockade, Rutland Stockade, Christ Church, Yankee Smith's Hotel, Gilfillan's house. Attributed by the vendor to Edward Arthur Williams although the style does not appear to be his and the view seems more likely to date from the 1840s than the 1860s. Williams visited Wanganui in 1864 and 1865. The church and both stockades were erected in the 1840s. Gilfillan left Wanganui in 1848 and Yankee Smith's Hotel was run by Alva G. Description: View looking down Princes Street towards Emily Place, with St Paul's church at the foot of the street, the harbour beyond. The long low house to the right of the church would have been that of Brigade-Major Joseph Greenwood. To the extreme left, the original Wood's Royal Hotel can be seen, with its verandah partly enclosed with lattice. The two-storey building next door to it is the Royal Masonic Hotel, and beside that, the Union Bank of Australia. Various men, women and children are standing or sitting in the street, and a carriage drawn by two horses, carrying four people, rides up the street According to Una Platts' 'The lively capital: Auckland 1840-1865', the image is given the title 'Princes Street, Auckland, 1849, with Colonel Wynyard's carriage'; this title does not appear on the original and may come from family knowledge Wynyard made two versions of the scene; the other is privately owned. Description: View from Governor's Bay looking back towards Lyttelton, with various features marked, including Mount Pleasant, H. M. S. Fly in the harbour, the Custom house, Major Hornby's Hotel [Major Hornbrook's hotel, the Mitre Inn] , the Emigration Barracks, a public cook house, the store and the temporary office of the Union Bank, John Robert Godley's house and garden, the Land Office, the Police Office and the Town Hall, Market Place, Jail and Hospital, the [Canterbury] Association Store House, the Esplanade, settlers' huts, the church, parsonage and school house. Several people including an artist are seated on rocks to the left, by an arched rock. The others are a woman with a baby and another woman with two small children. The reversing of the artist's initials and the naivety of the drawing may indicate that this is a contemporary copy by another hand of the original Cridland sketch located at C-014-002-1. It does, however, have more features indicated in writing than the C-014-002-1 version. Other Titles - Lyttelton. The boat labelled 'FLY' is not an accurate depiction of the HMS Fly. Description: Shows the township seen from Marsland Hill with the harbour and Sugar Loaf Rocks in the background and St Mary's Church with the beginnings of the new additions, started in 1860, in the foreground. Also various regiments (including 40th?) and encampments near church, military hospitals, Marsland Hotel, and various other churches. cf. Taranaki Museum's watercolour and pencil drawings of the same scene, and Hocken's col. lithographs, all signed by Edwin Harris, Harris may have copied Gold, and this painting has been attributed to Gold in the past. See Otago Daily Times, 9 Jan 1982, p. 30 for further confirmation of attribution The lithographic copy of this image in St Mary's Church, New Plymouth includes a key to various features. The title is New Plymouth from Marsland Hill. To the left of St Mary's, the two-storied building is Marsland Hotel and military Hospital. To the right, across the road, past the troops, the high-gabled single-storey building with a small porch by its door is the Maori Chapel. The two-storied building opposite the chapel is the Military Hospital. Further off to the right, the tallest building is the Wesleyan Chapel. Description: A detailed view of the houses and streets in the town from a high viewpoint, (the hill behind St Mary's Church) looking out to the west towards the sea. St Mary's Church and the churchyard are in the left foreground. The names of several house-owners are given, along with details of other features, including the houses of [William] Lakeman, Dorset, [Richard] Brown, "G. Inn" [Government Inn?] New Zealand Company houses [i.e. the immigration barracks], the gaol, Kawau Pa on the right, near the sea, a store (or stone?) house, the mill [Huatoki] stream, grass, streets, the bridge and gardens. The position of the South Huatoki Reef is also given, just out to sea, in line with the corner of the pa on the right. Brougham Street runs down the centre of the view, diagonally from the right bottom corner, with Vivian Street branching off to the right. Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
