Description: View along Invercargill's main street showing a number of houses and businesses. The earliest known view of Invercargill Between 1969, the time of acquisition by the Library, and 2010, attributed to W B D Mantell, based on handwriting, style of drawing and the fact that Mantell worked with Douglas, and was involved in the early settlement of Invercargill. However Mantell was in England in 1858, the date of this drawing. The drawing was earlier owned by Gerhard Mueller, who arrived in New Zealand in 1859, the year after this drawing was made. The `Pearson' whose house is drawn is W H Pearson, Commissioner of Lands, 1857-1884. `Grief' the butcher was J M Grieve. The Albion Hotel was also known as Linds Accommodation House. Other Titles - Douglas, Charles Edward Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - title in pen and ink. Along top, identifications of buildings include Whites store, Collins store, Collins Goods, Grief Butcher, Pearsons House, Butchershop, Royal Hotel. Description: Advertorial poster showing a lithograph of a view of Invercargill, with a river going through the centre, and horses and carriages in the streets. Description: A flat lightly bushed landscape at the base of the view showing Mataura, with a map above showing the course of the Waihopai River, Southland, and its passage out to sea, through the site of modern Invercargill. The map predates the settlement of Invercargill, whose site was selected in 1856. Various places are named on the map, including Oterawa and Taurakitewaru Wood at the mouth of the Waihopai River, Arowenua Wood (i. e. Arowhenua), Waihopai Woods and Oteraumaka Wood, as well as Pitokaika and Taurakarakauaraihe, both small areas of bush. Omaui Hill is shown to the South East, close to the sea.
