Description: View looking down Princes Street towards Emily Place, with St Paul's church at the foot of the street, the harbour beyond. The long low house to the right of the church would have been that of Brigade-Major Joseph Greenwood. To the extreme left, the original Wood's Royal Hotel can be seen, with its verandah partly enclosed with lattice. The two-storey building next door to it is the Royal Masonic Hotel, and beside that, the Union Bank of Australia. Various men, women and children are standing or sitting in the street, and a carriage drawn by two horses, carrying four people, rides up the street According to Una Platts' 'The lively capital: Auckland 1840-1865', the image is given the title 'Princes Street, Auckland, 1849, with Colonel Wynyard's carriage'; this title does not appear on the original and may come from family knowledge Wynyard made two versions of the scene; the other is privately owned. Description: A view of the Auckland foreshore, mid-19th century, from the water. A number of similarly-built houses can be seen near the water's edge, and one of them is surrounded by a low wooden fence with two gates (possibly being the house of Captain Denny). A small wooden pier, probably an early form of Wynyard Pier, runs out to the water. Various people are seen at leisure on the shore, including a woman with an umbrella, two men reclining against rocks, and a couple of children in a small rowboat. Although the hills are visible in the background, there is no sign of developing roads or other buildings further up the hillside. Description: Shows a view from the top of Mt. Eden, looking in part down at the ridges of the crater in the foreground, as well as out into the Auckland harbour, which shows North Head and Rangitoto Island in the distance. Description: Shows Commercial Bay with Wynyard Wharf in the foreground, North Head and Rangitoto in the distance, viewed from Courthouse Hill (now Constitution Hill). A tent-style building sits on the slope of the hill in the foreground to the left (probably Queen St.), with three figures standing in front of it. A number of vessels, including a sailing ship, sailing boats and rowboats or waka, can be seen in the bay. In the foreground on the right can be seen a Norfolk pine amongst other trees and bush, and the smoking brick chimney and part of the roof of a house. The word harbour in the work's title is mis-spelled as habour The library also holds a very similar work by Warre entitled Auckland harbor [1864?] (B-035-017), featuring North Head, Rangitoto Island, ships in the bay and a Norfolk pine, though with less built environment in the foreground. There is a sailing ship in the right distance, and a waka with two triangular sails on the harbour. Two Maori sit in the bracken, and their is a goat grazing in the left foreground. In the right centre background is a raised storehouse (?), and there is a clump of flax in the right foreground. The hill above Devonport has a flagstaff. Description: Two sailing ships (the Anna Watson and the Platina) in Auckland Harbour and a small boat with five people in the foreground. Planks of building timber, another rowboat on the foreshore and groups of tents on the higher ground to the left and on the skyline above cliffs. A red flag (the Red Ensign?) flying on a point at the top of the cliffs. The tent closest to the shore belonged to Captain Rough. Johnson did 2 drawings of this scene. The original of the other similar drawing has disappeared, but a copy made by Elizabeth Hocken is in the Hocken Library. It shows the flag being raised, cheered on by a group of onlookers.
