Martin, Albin, 1813-1888 :[The meeting of J C Firth with Te Kooti. 1870]

Date: 1876

By: Martin, Albin, 1812?-1888; Gordon, Mona Clifton, 1899-1977

Reference: G-496

Description: An extensive hilly landscape in the Waikato near Matamata with Firth in the centre by his horse, surrounded by large numbers of Maori. A monument to Tamihana Tarapipipi Te Waharoa is on the right not far from the Wairiri waterfall on the far right. The meeting took place in 1870 The painting was reviewed in the Daily Southern Cross, 8 June 1876, p.3: The artist has faithfully depicted the interview, and the beautiful landscape amidst which it took place. The chief personages, the armed band, Thompson's monument, the distant woods of Matamata and the grand mountain chain, with the magnificent waterfall of Wairiri, and the noble peak of Te Aroha mountain in the distance, are well placed on the canvas, and when finished, promise to complete a picture interesting for its historic facts and scenic beauty'. Exhibited: Auckland Institute and Museum, 1876; Albin Martin (curator, Roger Blackley, Auckland Art Gallery), Auckland Art Gallery, Waikato Museum of Art and History, National Library of New Zealand, and Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 12 August 1988 to 30 April 1989. See: Blackley, Roger. "Albin Martin" (Auckland City Art Gallery, 1988) p.60 'While on his Matamata estate in Janury 1870, Firth heard ... Te Kooti Rikirangi was in the mountains opposite. Firth's "friendly natives" fled to the Waikato settlements, while his sons were sent to Cambridge. The next day, Firth met Te Kooti at Tamihana's monument, accompanied by two chiefs and an interpreter. Te Kooti told him "he was weary of fighting and that if Government would let him alone he would fight no more", but that he would never surrender.' Other Titles - Josiah Clifton Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 496 x 742 mm (sight) Provenance: Estate of Mona Clifton Gordon, granddaughter of J C Firth. Preston, James 1834-1898 :[Fishermen at dawn on the South Canterbury coast, on William ...

Date: 1881 - 1898

By: Preston, James, 1834-1898; Rolleston, William, 1831-1903

Reference: A-123-028

Description: A seaside view at sunrise, showing a horse grazing in a paddock, a man seated on a hillock in the foreground, a tent and caravan and four men with fishing gear standing outside a weatherboard shed. Two further men are fishing on the right. The artist met his death while he was fishing in Geraldine, suggesting a great love of the sport. William Rolleston took up land at the mouth of the Rangitata River where he lived for most of his public life, from the 1860s. James Preston was appointed Anglican Minister to the Geraldine district from 1872. Compare Preston's watercolour "Rangitata Huts" in Canterbury Museum's collection - black and white photo held in photo file. This shows the same hut, caravan, tent and horse, sonewhat differently disposed. Suggested date range of execution is derived from the artist's addressing the recipient as "Hon.ble", suggesting William Rolleston was by then a Minister of the Crown, and by the artist's own date of death in 1898. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Other Titles - To Honourable W. Rolleston, Mrs Rolleston & Rolleston family. A very happy and prosperous new year to you all. J. Preston Inscriptions: Verso - inscription from the artist to the recipient, wishing the family a happy new year. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Ink, watercolour & Chinese white on wove paper 142 x 193 mm Provenance: Rolleston family, Canterbury Transfers: Rolleston family papers, MS Papers-0446-147, transferred to Drawings & Prints, October 1994..

Reference: A-169-031

Description: Shows figures on three horses dismounting at hut in centre left background. Hut appears to be of wood, with wooden chimney, and iron roof. A cart approaches in right distance. The title begins with 'and reach the hut' so is presumably a continuation of information in a diary or on another picture. Dated around 1890 as this is assumed to be the exterior of Mrs Birley's establishment shown in A-169-032. She is listed in Wises as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown during the 1880s, and then at Glenorchy in 1890-91. In 1892, J.K. Birley is listed as the hotel-keeper of Mt Earnslaw Hotel, Glenorchy, which may be a grander establishment than this one! Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). 6.20 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Ink and watercolour, 132 x 182 mm.
