Description: Postcards, chiefly of Australia, including Tasmania, Adelaide, Queensland, New South Wales, with several showing various tin mines in Tasmania. There is a section of New Zealand postcards in the middle of the album, many taken by an Australian photographic company "Charles H Kerry & Co", labelled "Series 53. Hot Lakes District, New Zealand". These images are tinted, and include views of the Huka Falls, the Pink and White Terraces, Waiotapu, Ohinemutu, Whakarewarewa, Lakes Waikaremoana and Taupo, and the Aratiatia Rapids. The NZ images also include views of the Mount Cook region of the South Island, including Franz Josef Glacier, Hooker Glacier, Mounts Darwin, Sefton and Cook, and Lakes Te Anau and Wakatipu. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Three photographs taken by the Burton Brothers show the sunken pa at Ohinemutu (Burton Bros. 3880); two Maori rangatira, image entitled `Were Were & Kiriwere, Waipahihi, Lake Taupo' (Burton Bros. 3747); and Maori meeting at Whare-Komiti-Haerehuka, King Country (Burton Bros. 3624). Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Martin album

Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884. An early series of 46 4to sepia photographs of New Zealand views. The date, 1884, is firmly established by the letter opposite [attached to album page. Unsigned and undated], which refers to both the album and G.A.
