Description: Original log book of an account of Jonas Eastwood Woodhouse of his journey from London, England to Southland, New Zealand on board the 'New Great Britain' in 1863. Also a typed transcript of the same. Woodhouse describes life on board the ship in detail, including the weather, food, entertainment, equator crossing celebrations, and deaths of other passengers. He also describes sailing past Solander and Steward [Stewart?] Islands and arriving in Southland where they were met by a pilot ship and assessed for quarantine. He gives his impressions of the bush, houses, gardens, animals, and pig hunting that he could see from the ship before they landed. Also includes a list of passengers on the ship, organised by county and country, and the words to 'Song of the New Great Britain' composed by Mr Robert Wotton - another passenger on the ship. Also includes letters addressed to Mr F R Woodhouse (a great grandson of Woodhouse and previous owner of the book) in relation to the log book (letters dated 1956, 1976, and 1981). Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: Album of photographs taken between the 1860s and 1890s by various unidentified photographers, with one identified as being possibly by Daniel Louis Mundy, and one by James Bragge. Two early photographs, one of `Oakbourne Station', the home of John Davis Canning was taken circa 1860s, and one of `Orua Wharo' the home of John Johnston, and later his son Sydney Johnston, was taken circa 1870s, before the new house was built in 1879. Page 7 contains pressed ferns. Non-New Zealand photographs include several of Fiji, including Levuka, Taveuni, and an avenue of palms; one of the carving on Sir Joshua Reynold's bed at Tarrington; one of an Elizabethan glass cup; a carved overmantel; two views of Arundel House at Brighton, and one of Heston Church near Osterley Park. In the North Island, apart from the views of Oakbourne and Orua Wharo in the Hawke's Bay region, there are several views of the Pink and White Terraces, two showing the White Terraces both empty and full, Clay Island beneath the White Terraces; two views of the Manawatu Gorge and Seventy Mile Bush; and a view of Wellington City. South Island views include Milford Sound, Stewart Island, Braida Crags, the Wyndham River; a large group of people at celebrations surrounding the laying of the foundation stone for St John's Church in Invercargill; and two views of an exhibition of a Japanese village displaying such things as banners, lanterns and furniture, held in a hall in Invercargill. Description: Comprises a photograph album containing images taken William Dougall and Frank Coxhead between 1861 and 1889 showing views of Otago and Fiordland, and a voyage to Campbell, Auckland and Antipodes Islands. Dougall's account of the voyage on the 'Stella' was published in The Southland Times between 15 to 21 February 1888 under the column heading "Far South". Negatives and photographic prints taken by William Dougall are also held at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand. Two copies of the 'Far South' pamphlet which accompanied the photograph album are held in the National Library of New Zealand catalogue at PAM 919.31 DOU 1888 and Pam 1888 DOU 1545 (Alexander Turnbull Library copy). Photographer William Dougall travelled as official photographer on the New Zealand government steamer CGS 'Stella' to the Stewart, Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands in 1888. His account and photographs of the voyage were published as set of a bound photograph album and a pamphlet titled 'Far South: Stewart Island, The Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands: Notes' in 1888.
