Description: The sketchbook and diary notes at the end record a ten-day tramp of a group of Wanganui Collegiate boys, including the artist, a master at the school, from Wanganui to climb Ruapehu and return. The sketches include views of Mt Egmont from Oeo and Paritutu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, Mangawhero Falls, Karioi, the interior of Waihohono hut, Waimarino Plains and two boys greeting a Maori man. This trip is written up in "The Wanganui Collegian", no. 22, April 26 1890, p. 11-14, signed E. W. Andrews. The group were "our senior prefect and cricket captain Bannister, and Marris who won the 1st Junior Scholarship this year, P. Marshall, well known as an old identity, H. Montgomerie, leader of our rugby scrummage, and myself...". The group met at Aramoho railway bridge just out of Wanganui on the morning of 18 January 1890, reaching "R. Montgomerie's station" Taukoro on the first evening. They followed the Mangawhero River, via the pa of Otuku and turned off at the Parapara Valley to view the waterfalls. They passed the pa of Parapara the next morning and reached Karioi the next day (21 January). The following day they reached Waihohono on the Rangipo desert and the ascent of Ruapehu took place on 23 January. Two of the party then returned to Wanganui (Bannister and Montgomerie), while the other three went on to Tokaanu, "where Marris and Marshall stayed for a day or two exploring, while I whose school engagements were of an inconveniently pressing nature, went round by Rotoaria and Okotu through the Waimarino Plain and so to Karioi by the western side of the mountain, and back to Wanganui by Field's Track."
