Description: Two images on one page. The upper image shows a group of Maori children on a swing or moari, a tall pole with ropes attached from its top, flying out over a bank, watched by a group of seated adults and children. The palisades of a pa are in the right background and a low hill in the distance. The lower view shows a haka, with naked men in the act of raising oars, watched by other Maori. Canoes are drawn up at the edge of Lake Rotorua and the palisades of Ohinemutu Pa and its higher buildings can be seen behind the men. Both drawings are copied from the work of Joseph Jenner Merrett, without acknowledgement. See the Library's Hobson Album for Merrett's drawing 'A native game' showing the swing. (E-216-017). This was drawn before 1843. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. Similarly, in the Hobson Album, also by Merrett is 'The pah of Oinamutu on the Rotorua Lake', which provides the background Angas has used for War Dance. Description: Shows a view looking down on a group of Maori whare on the peninsula at Ohinemutu, with Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island in the background. Steam rises from the ground at two points Artist attributed by inscription inside front cover. Artist assumed to be Dr Henry Thomas Spratt, rather than his son Henry Howell Spratt. See Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Volume 1, Wellington, page 884. The view pre-dates the building of the first St Faith's Church at Ohinemutu, showing simply the Maori settlement, with no church. Description: View of a memorial erected to the memory of Petera Te Pukuatua. The grave is situated at Ohinemutu near the Tama te Kapua Meeting House and the statue of Queen Victoria. It is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. The gravestone has an inscription on one side (from angle of photo it can not be read) and there is a large figure of an angel on top of the plinth. On the far left is a flag pole. A woman is standing near the grave with a small boy sitting on the ground at her feet, both are looking at the photographer. Photograph taken by William A Price in early 1900s. A later photograph of the memorial, taken from the same angle, but after a wooden fence was erected, is at 1/2-001439. Description: View looking down onto Lake Rotorua, with Mokoia in the distance. The Ohinemutu peninsula is on the right with steam rising from amongst the Maori whare. In the foreground is a whare on the left, a palisade and several Maori figures. Probably copied from a drawing by John Johnson or a copy of that drawing by Cuthbert Clarke. See Cuthbert Clarke;s 'Ohinemotu. From an outline by Dr Johnson [1849]' a conte drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 19954, folio 29, no. 31) of which the Turnbull holds a photograph.
