Description: The cartoon shows Wiremu Kingi Tarapipi Te Waharoa (Wiremu Thompson after baptism) saying to a Maori chief that 'The general (Carey) is in disgrace you say, and the queen's troops are to be sent away, and the volunteers and rangers are coming against us. Then, Kingi, (Wi Kingi te Rangitake?) the sooner we surrender the better'. To the right in the background is a ship at sea and troops are marching towards it, overseen by Brigadier-General Carey on horseback. A group of volunteer Pakeha troops are marching up from the middle distance on the right. The Cartoon shows the moment when Wiremu Tamehana decides that the Maori must surrender. In 1860 Wiremu Thompson travelled to Taranaki in the roles of negotiator and mediator between Maori and Pakeha. Later, when war broke out in the Waikato, he again acted as peacemaker, but his attempts were not completely appreciated by Pakeha leaders of the time. The drawing is possibly the work of G. F. von Tempsky. The seated woman in the centre is strongly reminiscent of his work, and he is known to have drawn illustrations for 'Punch, or the Wellington Charivari' in the mid-1860s. On the left ("At home i.e England), a ragged young woman with a child behind her is shivering in a snowy street near a pub advertising gin, while a top-hatted man is reaching out an admonishing hand. On the right ('Abroad' i.e. somewhere in the colonies) is a family that has emigrated to one of the colonies, an interior scene with two well-fed children and the parents at a table, with hams and other food hanging above and the mother holding a laughing baby above her head, while the smiling father watches as he peels a potato. Description: Shows a kiwi at the right, the foot in the centre, and the beak at the left. Book is shelved in NZ&P 910.4 1838-1839. The complete specimen is drawn from a dried skin. It is standing upright and appears much thinner than a living kiwi. Source: the details of beak and claw with a separate view of the complete bird were originally published about 1813 by George and Elizabeth Shaw in 'The naturalist's miscellany' Other Titles - The beak. Description: A group of Maori engaging in a cannibal feast beside the sea or a lake, with a canoe drawn up beside them, and two heads on poles. Rouargue, the artist, is not known to have visited New Zealand. The scene is likely to be an imaginary illustration, based on written or verbal descriptions. Description: Two contrasting scenes. On the left ("Here". i.e England), a vagrant family of parents and four barefooted ragged children, standing outside a building, with smokestacks in the background. There is a notice on the door of the building heading 'caution all vagrants'. On the right ('There' i.e. somewhere in the colonies) is a family that has emigrated to one of the colonies, an interior scene with well-fed children and the parents at a groaning table, with hams and a animal carcass hanging above and the mother just serving a dish, while the father carves. A dog is seated at the table and a baby is in a cradle on the floor. There is a palm tree or tree fern visible through the window to the outside, and a dark-skinned native is being served a dish by the oldest daughter of the family. Extended Title - From: Punch.
