Description: Collection comprises extracts taken from Krull's letters to his mother covering the period 15 January (just prior to arrival at Wellington on the `Equator') to 25 May 1859. They describe life in early Wellington, trips taken to the Wairarapa through the Hutt Valley and to Otaki, and Krull's impressions of the natives. Includes preface page written by Boll. Accompanying material - Accompanied by copy of article on Krull from Wanganui Historical Record, (November 1980), and copy of letter from donor re provenance of letters. Frederick Krull arrived in New Zealand in January 1859 on board the Swedish ship `Equator'. He established himself as a well-known merchant in Wellington, and was a member of the City Council and Harbour Board. During her childhood the family lived in the Hutt Valley, Karori, and Otaki. At twenty-one Elizabeth married John Hollard, and went to live at Tauherenikau in the Wairarapa. Her husband was a dairy farmer who later rather unsuccessfully tried to grow grain and fruit. Elizabeth worked in the dairy as one of her daily domestic chores Quantity: 2 volume(s) (66 pages). Accompanying material - Genealogical chart of Captain Edward Daniell's family, dated 1918 Juliette Deane (née Daniell) was the daughter of Capt Edward Daniell. She was born in Wellington in 1842. The Daniell family lived at Te Aro after arriving from England. In 1843 they moved to their farm `Trelissick' in Ngaio, and later to the Hutt Valley.
