Daniel, Josephine Dalziel, 1893-1975 : Reese family letters

Description: Consists of 7 letters, transcripts of these letters and a genealogical table of the Reese/Dalziel family showing the relationships of people mentioned in the letters. Five of the letters are written by Anne Dawson (Reese). Letters dated June 1866, May 1884, July 1884 and Dec 1888 are to her parents and one dated Jan 1888 to her sister Marion (?). The letter by Anne Dawson dated July 1884 includes a note from her husband Joseph Dawson. Of the other two letters one is written by Maggie Dalziel Reese to her aunt Anne Dawson, dated Jan 1885. The final letter in this collection was probably written by Marion Reese to her niece Josephine Dalziel Daniel (Dawson). The date and authorship of this letter is based on internal evidence as there is only a fragment of the letter. All the letters are primarily about family affairs and happenings in the local district. Joseph Dawson's note is concerned with the electioneering in which he was involved on behalf of Mr McCardle. Anne's brother Daniel Reese was subsequently elected to a Christchurch seat. Accompanying material - Accompanied by a list and background information concerning the collection. Source of title - supplied title The Reese family came to Canterbury individually and in groups from 1862 to 1867. The eldest son, Daniel, arrived first. He was followed in 1864 by the two eldest of his sisters, Jean Russell and Anne. In 1866 the parents, Thomas and Jean Reese arrived with their two remaining daughters, Marion and Mary. Alexander, the other son, arrived in 1867. Daniel developed a building business in Christchurch and remained there. He served in the House of Representatives 1884-1887. The remaining children all moved to the North Island, particularly to the Wairarapa and Rangitikei. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Probably a diazo copy of MapColl 832.14hkm/1864/Acc.37093 which is a hand drawn map of Orakau Pa, copied with some minor changes, from an original of the same title, which details the position of British troops in the battle and the line of retreat from the pa. Names of regiments and commanding officers are given at various locations approaching the pa, some having the date of 2nd April. An area labelled 'Headquarters 2 guns' is marked and the military term 'Picquet' locates two places on the map. Includes a plantation, reserve, Ti Tree and Raupo Swamps and contour lines. A reference key indicates parapets, banquettes, ditches and whares [sic]. Three plans, inset and with a different scale to the area map, are of the pa with its approach and two cross sectional views, labelled A-B and C-D. Description: James and Elizabeth Rowbotham of Cheshire arrived in Nelson in 1842 on `Martha Ridgway'. Elizabeth's parents, brother and two sisters were fellow passengers. The families faced considerable difficulties in early Nelson. James bought land at Stoke and brought up three children. Charlotte, the eldest, married Jabez Hill in 1865. They bought land at Brightwater and built a home for their 14 children. Charlotte was widowed in 1890 and struggled to provide for her family. Loose material laid in to the volume comprises: a newspaper clipping about the Tarawera eruption; a postcard of the Mission Church, Wairoa, before the Tarawera eruption; a photograph of a painting of the Mount Tarawera eruption mounted on card which has a cartoon pasted on the back called 'Native auction' that shows a group of Māori people auctioning off missionaries' bones while standing on a platform in front of what looks like a pātaka (food store); a photograph of Rewiri, sitting in front of a small hut covered in mud and ash after the Tarawera eruption; a photograph of a sketch by S. Percy Smith of Puwai Island (Lake Rotomahana) dated 1858; and a typescript of an annotated draft article titled 'Manx Memories: The mermaid's 400' dated Oct 1941 by Cowan, relating to the migration of his mother's father James Qualtrough, from the Isle of Man to New Zealand, in the 1850s. The photograph of Rewiri is taken by the Burton Brothers at Te Wairoa, 1886, and is wrongly attributed as being a photograph of 'Tuhoto the tohunga' on an inscription on the back.
