Description: The collection consists of two diaries kept by Mary during 1854 and 1858-1859, and letters addressed to her. The largest proportion are written by her future husband, Spenser Mansel Medley and record in detail the progress of their courtship. Other letters were written by Richard Taylor, Mary Caroline Taylor, Elizabeth Marriott and Sarah Selwyn. In addition there are some naval certificates of Spencer Medley. Source of title - Supplied title Mary Catherine Medley was the daughter of Richard Taylor and Mary Caroline Taylor. Description: Diary entries from the Taylors' arrival in England in July 1867 to 31 Jan 1870, and 1 June 1871 until their return to New Zealand in November of the same year. Mrs Taylor records their daily activities and the people they met, especially family affairs and concerns. An account of their voyage back to NZ on the `Shannon' to Melbourne, by the `Tararua' to Port Chalmers and then by a variety of transport back to Wanganui. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - The Library received photocopies of the originals of these two diaries which Springer has not transcribed; the Taylors's journey to England was largely for Rev R Taylor to prepare his second book for publication. Description: Shows views of Maori buildings in Papawai and Te Ore Ore (Masterton area), the homesteads of A. Hutt and A. Hawdon at Underwood (possibly Port Underwood), Picton, Wanganui, Canterbury Plains (including Mt Peel, Rangitata), Feilding (including Lord Ranfurly's arrival there), Wairarapa, Levin (a Maori house), W. Maunsel's house in Masterton, the home of H. Nixon at Sedgebrook, and the Church Mission house at Waimate (Bay of Islands). This last is by Richard Taylor (Mary Medley's father), as is a view of St Sampson Church, Guernsey. At the back are loose sketches with copies of Edward Lear's illustrated limericks. Description: Contains official copies of correspondence relating to land claims from Te Tai Tokerau and Pewhairangi (i.e. Bay of Islands, the word is a transliteration), Waikato and Whanganui. Includes various documents relating to Whanganui giving extensive lists of names for the purchase of guns, powder and flint by Whanganui Maori; lists of Whanganui Maori working for the Regional Magistrate and their salaries; census of friendly natives, Whanganui district. The last document is the original of the deed by which Nopera Parakareao and other Te Rarawa chiefs sold the Muriwhenua lands of Te Aupouri to the Rev Richard Taylor, witnessed by William Gilbert Puckey, 20 January 1840. A translation of this in Taylor's hand is in MS-Papers-0075-106E. Written only two weeks before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to secure private property rights for Taylor (before the arrival of Hobson and the signing of the Treaty) but the publication of Gipps's proclamations of 14 January 1840 invalidated the sale.
