Description: Thompson wrote his reminiscences in 1956, shortly before he died. He describes his family background, where they lived, his school days, mostly in Palmerston North, joining Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, in 1905 and moving to Nelson in 1906, Hokitika in 1910, Invercargill in 1911, Hastings in 1913, Wanganui from 1919 to 1924 when he worked for the Public Works Department in the King Country and in 1935 his move to Greymouth. Description: Selected reminiscences, letters and documents relating to the general history of individual settlements. Notable for one series of letters to W H Rawson, Yorkshire, relating to Nelson land settlement, 1842-1853, and typescript copies of letters to Gilbert Mair from James Busby, Sydney, 1840-1841. Includes correspondence from Lord Bledisloe and Sir Willoughby Norrie. Arrangement: A sorting of these records resulted in their division into two series, the first placed on permanent loan with the Library, and the second retained by the Society The first series consists of manuscripts selected because of their historical value and housed at the Library. A number of newspapers, maps, art material, photographs and pamphlets were also placed on permanent loan and are listed. The second series consists of records retained by the Society.
