Description: Bennett desribes his experiences travelling and surveying in Ireland (1838-1840); his voyage on the `Lady Clarke' to Sydney and his brief stay there (1841) and the voyage to NZ in 1842. He gives his impressions of Kororareka and Russell (Okiato) including a lengthy discussion of Hone Heke's actions in Kororareka and writes further of his residence in Auckland and Wellington. Volume also has an appendix (50 page Maori word list) Bennett was with the Royal Engineers. In 1844 he was in Kerikeri but after being ill for some months, died in 1845. Description: Photographs taken by Russell Duncan, dated 1893, 1903, 1910, 1914 and 1920. Images show places of historical interest in the Bay of Islands, Dusky Sound, and the Bay of Plenty. Included are views of John Fox's house at Paihia; William Busby's house at Waitangi; the Kemp House; the Stone Store at Kerikeri; the site of Governor Hobson's house at Okiato; Bishop Pompallier's house at Russell; the site of the Roberton House on Motuarohia Island, where Mrs Roberton (wife of Captain Richard Roberton), her two children, a Māori-Pākehā boy, and a man-servant were killed on 20 November 1841, and their house burnt; and the last post standing at Te Heu Heu's Pa (Waitahanui Pa) at Taupo. Several views follow of areas in Dusky Sound, and one of Sulphur Bay on Whale Island, Bay of Plenty.
