Description: Photographs, chiefly of the Wellington area, probably taken by Frank J Denton. A number show the house `Fernhill' in Woolcombe Street (now part of The Terrace), Wellington, views from the house and its gardens. Portraits in clude Laurie Denton, Tom Tolley (locksmith), Alfred Bennett and his family, Mrs Denton Snr, Mrs Waters (had a grocery shop in Dixon Street), G L Adkin (as a boy), Miss Dixon (of the aerated water family, the Dixons of Dixon Street), George Butler (artist), and Beaglehole (David Ernest Beaglehole, father of Professor Ernest Beaglehole, and Professor John Cawte Beaglehole). Also includes photograph of a portrait painted by George Edmund Butler of his father Joseph Cawte Butler (maternal grandfather of John Cawte Beaglehole). Bound by Parliamentary Library, using blank pages to bulk out the contents. Red buckram, half red morocco Catalogued by Parliamentary Library as the work of I W Wilson and ca 1910. The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library. Images fall into three broad groups: - Unidentified portraits (including the two taken circa 1900s) - Staff and factory floor images taken at suit manufacturer J A Wilkinson & Son Ltd, possibly in Wellington circa 1940s - Scenes in Wellington, and scenes and buildings in Auckland and Wellington Specific items show a table of wedding gifts, the ship 'TSS Wahine' with a damaged bow at Pipitea Wharf, Wellington, in June 1936, a group outside a meeting house circa 1920s, an unidentified building decorated with ships wheel motifs, a significant ceremony outside an unidentified building under construction circa 1920s, Auckland University clock tower circa 1920s, Auckland Railway Station, and Oriental Bay marina, Wellington. Description: Album of photographs, mainly of the Wellington Region, Marlborough and Horowhenua Regions, interspersed with copies of photographs by unidentified photographers, unidentified lithographs and illustrations. A number of the photographic copies are portraits of Maori. The last images in the album, taken by unidentified photographers, relate to Darjeeling (Bengal, India). Description: Three coloured postcards, one of a old Maori woman dozing outside a house (identified as Ceylon Wickliffe's Great Aunt), a Maori girl described as the Arawa Belle (identified as Marie McFarland), and some Maori children playing in the lake at Ohinemutu; the seven men of the executive of the New Zealand Harbour Boards Conference seated outside a building; three photographs of a Maori event in a park, probably in Wellington, with tents pitched and participants wearing kakahu over European dress; two women in traditional dress next to a wood carving, one is holding a hoe; a hut at Hawk's Crag on the Buller River; a loaded cart passing through Porter's Pass; Wellington wharves seen from Oriental Parade; the Buller River; a group of men gathered round a table to sign a document; view from Mount Cook towards Mount Victoria with what are possibly brickworks in the foreground; and photographs of four petitions submitted in Greymouth.
