Artist unknown :View from door step, Taurarua. [Between 1882 and 1886?]

Date: 1882 - 1886

By: Turnbull, Alexander Horsburgh, 1868-1918

Reference: A-090-019

Description: View from the home of Chief Judge, Sir William Martin, at Taurarua, (Judges Bay) Auckland, loking towards St Stephen's Chapel and the graveyard, with the Waitemata Harbour and the beach at Judge's Bay to the left. Formerly attributed to William Bambridge on stylistic grounds and dated between 1841 and 1849. (Bambridge's Diary for 1846-1848, p. 92 (Acc. no 8600) describes how he sketched Taurarua Church and his acquaintance with Judge William Martin). However a number of factors suggest a much later dating of the early to mid 1880s. The trees surrounding the site are quite mature, showing at least 25 years growth. Earlier sketches show much younger, smaller trees, or no trees e.g. Backhouse's 'View from Brighton, Parnell, Auckland, 1871' (E-400-f-009) and a watercolour by John Kinder in Auckland City Art Gallery. More conclusively, the large obelisk gravestone near the top of the hill, (the Hay family gravestone) was not erected until the early 1880s, nor was the cruciform gravestone (Sister Cecil's) to its left. (Information from Robert Phillips, Auckland, 7 October 2001). The second St Stephen's Chapel is shown (as a cruciform wooden church with bell tower). The previous rectangular chapel, built in 1843 (of scoria and without a bell-tower), collapsed in a storm in 1847 and the second church was not constructed until 1857. Other Titles - Judges Bay Inscriptions: Recto - on a separate strip of paper glued down the left side of the image: title Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on cream laid paper, 113 x 159 mm Provenance: Possibly part of Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull's collection.

Cemetery, probably Whanganui region

Date: [187-?]

From: Harding, William James, 1826-1899: Negatives of Wanganui district

Reference: 1/1-000053-G

Description: Photograph of a cemetery situated on a hill overlooking a body of water and distant hills, probably the main General Cemetery section of Heads Road Cemetery in Whanganui [or Wanganui] township. The view appears to be taken from a small hill near the Guyton Street entrance. A dirt road is in the foreground, and two blurred figures standing near a fenced grave. The image was possibly taken circa 1870s by the studio of William James Harding, Whanganui. This photograph is identified in Library negative register as Aramoho Cemetery but a Whanganui researcher in 2016 stated that there was no Aramoho Cemetery until 1914-1915. The image may have been taken later than 1870s, by Frank James Denton who took over Harding's studio. Alternatively, this image may show the Old Wanganui Cemetery or the cemetery at Aramoho Marae in Whanganui, now known as Te Ao Hou Marae. Further information from another researcher in 2020 confirmed the location as Heads Road Cemetery. Source of descriptive information - Negative register and inscriptions on negative; and information from researchers. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Physical Description: Glass negative, 6.5 x 8.5 inches Processing information: This record was updated in 2016 and 2020 with information from researchers concerning the name and location of the cemetery depicted..

[Mitford, John Guise] 1822-1854 :[The Hobson album. View from above Grafton Gully showi...

Date: 1843 - 1844

From: [Various artists] :[Mrs Hobson's album. 1843-1845]

By: Mitford, John Guise, 1822-1854

Reference: E-216-f-111

Description: View from above Grafton Gully, covered in dense bush, with low fenced hills and Governor Hobson's grave in the cemetery in the centre. A road runs past the cemetery towards Government House in the middle distance. Several other houses can also be seen. In the distance across the water, the flagstaff marks Mount Victoria, with Rangitoto beyond that. The flat island further off, left of centre is Tiritiri. Painted in early 1843, before the artist moved to an appointment at Russell. A fence has been raised around Governor Hobson's grave. The funeral had taken place in November 1842. Compare Mitford's very similar view at E-216-f-041. The view is attributed to Edward Ashworth by Janet Paul in Mrs Hobson's album (Auckland, 1990) p. 149. However there are strong stylistic similarities to the work of Mitford, and it seems more likely that he painted two views from similar spots for Mrs Hobson Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
