Description: Hand-drawn map which shows topographic features, vegetation and the boundary of Reserve 2652. Shows the land to the south of the reserve to the Tasman River. Pencil note on map says 'T N Brodrick?'. Lettering on map is not the same as other maps by Brodrick. Phillip Temple believes that the map was drawn by Wright based on a letter by Wright to J H Baker, Canterbuy Chief Surveyor, in 1884 in which he refers to the features, names and numbers shown on the map and recommending that the area be put under reserve. The reserve was created in 1885. W C Wright is listed as a surveyor for the Canterbury District of the Survey Dept under J H Baker, Chief Surveyor, by Wises New Zealand post office directory, 1883-4 Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: Shows a view of Wellington and Wellington Harbour as far as the Hutt Valley. The view includes the Terrace and Terrace prison, the streets and buildings of Oriental Bay and Te Aro on the flat, including gasometers, chimneys and churches (St John's and St Peter's Willis Street), the houses on Mount Victoria, Somes Island. Three cows and a calf are attended by a man with a staff, in the foreground. The image is similar to that at C-030-025, "[Te Aro and Wellington Harbour]", but extends further on either side. The scale is very similar, but the images of the buildings are not identical. Unlike most other Aubrey works held in the Library, both of these pictures use some gum arabic in the foreground. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C Aubrey 1888 Very similar to C-030-025, "[Te Aro and Wellington Harbour]", but includes detail on both sides missing in Te Aro and Wellingon Harbour. Unlike most other Aubrey works held by the Library, this work uses some gum arabic in the foreground. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour and gum arabic, 531 x 918 mm. Description: Shows a view looking down from a rocky outcrop (partially seen in the extreme left foreground), on to the field of a farm with horses, cattle, a farmhouse, outbuildings, and at far right a haystack. A row of trees runs along one of the boundaries of the property, parallel to the river in the background. On the far side of the river are limestone cliffs and hills. The locality is more commonly known as Clifden, and Cyclopedia of New Zealand, volume 4, Otago and Southland, decribes it as having been a large sheep station. Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: A card showing images from Opotiki in memory of Carl Sylvius Volker. Comprises: `Rev Volkner's house', `Rev Volkner's church', Memorial gravestone of Rev Volkner, `The Gallows Tree', 'Stern-post of war canoe', Baler, 'Head-gear of war canoe', and photograph of Opotiki Inscriptions: Recto - Memories of a martyr Carl Sylvius Volkner born in Kassel, Germany, trained as a missionary and was one of several missionaries sent to New Zealand by the North German Missionary Society. He arrived in New Zealand August 1849 and initially worked in Taranaki with fellow German Protestant missionaries before offering his services to the Church Missionary Society (1852). He took charge of the CMS mision station at Opotiki (August 1861). Despite hostilities and ignoring warnings he remained at Opotiki until 1865, when he was taken prisoner , charged with being a spy and was taken to a willow tree and hanged.
