[Fox, William] 1812-1893 :[Westoe. ca 1874?]

Date: 1872 - 1875

By: Fox, William, 1812-1893

Reference: WC-049

Description: Shows William Fox's station Westoe, viewed from the side. There is a group of people riding on a cart drawn by two horses, leaving the house, and bush and hills beyond it. The view is from across the river, but the artist has enlarged the house relative to the place from which he must have drawn it; also the carriage and horses are too large for the proportions of the house. This house was completed in 1874, but possibly substantially built by 1872. See WC-050 for Fox's dated picture of the house Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000. Curated by Jill Trevelyan. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 106 x 315 mm

[D...on, H?], fl 1875 :House erected near Marton for the Honourable W Fox, Feb. 13, 1874.

Date: 1874

Reference: Plans-80-2280

Description: Shows front and side elevations and ground floor plan of Westoe, William Fox's home near Marton, Rangitikei, built 1872. A key indicates the function of most rooms, apart from the stables on the right. A small sketch in the centre shows a couple, possibly intended for William and Sarah Fox, standing alongside a tall measuring device, perhaps to indicate the height of the house, relative to human height. Another figure stands alongside, holding a spear and gesturing in the direction of the house. This drawing of Westoe does not appear to be the work of the architect, Charles Tringham. It omits some details, such as chimneys. The title, 'House erected near Marton for the Hon.ble W. Fox, February 13 1874' suggests that the house was already built. The tender for the work on the house was let at the end of 1871. The contractor, Lambert, became insolvent in mid-1872. The owners of the house in 2008 claimed that the work was completed by H. Austin in 1874 but the source of this information is not known. Fox's watercolour WC-050, showing the apparently completed house, with an embryonic garden is dated 1872 The script used is extremely difficult to decipher. The same script appears on the nearly identical print at C-154-003, and on another drawing attributed to Tringham at Plans-80-0455. The script may be that of Tringham's draughtsman Other Titles - Austin Neeson Dawson Westoe Dowson Doulton Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - H? Iveson? Austin? Newton? Dawson? Dowson? del, Feb 13 1874 House, named `Westoe', was designed by Charles Tringham and built by H Austin of Halcombe (Information transcribed from the Library's catalogue card. The source of this information is unknown. Halcombe township did not exist until after 1875). Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Dye line print, 340 x 460 mm

[Fox, William] 1812-1893 :Westoe Rangitikei 1872

Date: 1872 - 1874

By: Fox, William, 1812-1893

Reference: WC-050

Description: Close view of the front of William Fox's newly-built house, with children in a horse-drawn cart on the curving drive outside the front front door. Garden beds are established at the edge of the drive, with a circular bed in front of the house, with mature cabbage trees and another tree. Reproduced as the front cover illustration of the Alexander Turnbull Library Desk Diary, 1989. The house was not completed until 1874 (information from the current owners). Either this was a speculative drawing by Fox, based on the architect's drawings, or he labelled it at a later date and was mistaken about the date. Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000. Curated by Jill Trevelyan. Inscriptions: title and date in ink on separate label, once part of the backing board Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 255 x 413 mm
